Mr Fabio De Robertis is a Consultant in Cardiac Surgery and Transplantation at Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals working with private and NHS patients. He has a vast experience in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), Structural Heart Disease (valves, aorta, Hypertrophic CardioMyopathy) and surgery for the failing heart.
His opinion is highly valued by his colleagues also outside his institution. He belongs to numerous experts panels of Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) in the London Area to advise on the best treatment for patients requiring both main stream or subspecialty cardiac surgery.
He also works at Harley Street Clinic in London for private patients only. He is a registered provider for all the biggest health insurance companies and would consider registering for the ones not listed below on an ad hoc basis.
Mr De Robertis built his expertise in complex cardiac conditions by working with several internationally renowned surgeons during the course of his entire career and maintains collaborations with many of them. The bulk of his experience was formed at institutions in Naples and Rome - Italy; London; Cleveland Clinic - Ohio and Yale University - Connecticut, USA.
His first interest was in coronary surgery performed on a beating heart whilst utilising arterial conduits. In 1996 whilst training at the University of Naples Federico II, he completed his MD with a thesis on the benefits of this technique. Mr De Robertis has been practicing Off Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OPCAB) with arterial conduits ever since.
He moved to Rome and worked at the San Camillo Hospital in the field of structural heart disease. In particular Mr De Robertis dedicated time learning the techniques for the treatment of aortic aneurysm and infection of the valves, including minimally invasive mitral repair.
He later joined Professor Yacoub and Mr Khaghani at Harefield Hospital to obtain further subspecialty training in complex cardiac conditions and transplantation. It is there that Mr De Robertis refined his expertise in the most advanced techniques he currently uses, with a 18-month spell at the Royal Brompton Hospital entirely dedicated to the training in mitral reconstructive surgery and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Intervention (TAVI).
By the time of his appointment in 2009 as a Consultant Cardiac & Transplant Surgeon, Mr De Robertis had gained a wide experience not only in routine cardiac surgery but also in the subspecialty fields of redo surgery, aorto-vascular surgery, infective endocarditis, valve sparing root replacement, reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive techniques and of course …. beating heart surgery.
Learning never stops and few years into his consultant appointment at the Royal Brompton & Harefield, one of the biggest cardiac surgery institutions in the UK, Mr De Robertis interest expanded towards the surgical treatment for Hypertrophic Obstructive CardioMyopathy (HOCM).
Mr De Robertis offers a modern approach to this condition by integrating advanced imaging and electrophysiology with reconstructive surgery techniques. Borrowing from his experience in different subspecialties, Mr De Robertis is able to combined different parts of the operations extracted from different techniques and offers a completely tailored operation to cater for all anatomical variances that may be encountered.
He consolidated his practice by experience at the Cleveland Clinic, OH, USA and later on at the Yale University, CT, USA, both institutions regarded as centres of excellence in the world for the treatment of HOCM.
Upon his return to UK, he developed a strong surgical team that grew from strength to strength and it has now reached international resonance as confirmed by the numerous invitations Mr De Robertis receives for lecturing on the subject.
Mr De Robertis individualises the care for each patient based on their assessment. He makes use of the most modern integrated imaging techniques and discussion of the results among expert panels in MDTs. He always makes sure his patients understand what their condition is all about, what can be done for it and what to expect during the period they will spend in hospital and thereafter.
Mr De Robertis interest to guarantee safety and provide excellence for all patients was once again demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time when all other Units in London had been converted to treat Coronavirus patients only, his institution was tasked to provide cardiac surgery for half of capital city and beyond. Suddenly they were flooded with emergency and non-deferrable cases.
Mr De Robertis designed a specific Covid-19 protocol of screening for all patients requiring cardiac interventions. This allowed the treatment of all these life-threatening heart conditions without jeopardising the safety of patients and staff. Thanks in part to this protocol, his institution performed the highest number of heart operations in London and with zero patients experiencing a new sero-conversion whilst at the hospital.
