Mr Carlos Cobiella is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He qualified from Medical School at the Universidad Autonoma in Madrid, Spain and completed his basic surgical training in London. He then undertook specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and subspecialist training in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Shoulder and Elbow Unit and at the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
In 2003, he took up a consultant post at the Whittington Hospital where he set up the Shoulder and Elbow service. Two years later, he moved to UCLH where he led a team of Shoulder and Hand surgeons.
He is founder of The Shoulder Practice and leads the Upper Limb section of the ISEH (Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health), one of the nine research centres worldwide accredited by the International Olympic Committee. He was member of the Olympic Medical Team in London 2012. He is member of the NFL Physician Society.
Mr Cobiella sees patients with all aspects of shoulder and elbow conditions, including sports injuries, arthritis and fractures. He has a particular interest in arthroscopic techniques in the treatment of complex instability and rotator cuff repair with graft augmentation.
Carlos Cobiella is actively involved in teaching and training of medical students and junior doctors. He is a member of faculty in numerous national and international courses in Arthroscopic and Sports Injury Surgery. He has co-authored numerous publications and regularly presents at scientific conferences. He is founder and convenor of the annual London Shoulder Meeting, the largest independent Shoulder and Elbow conference in the UK.
He is part of international study groups that focus on developing new strategies in the management of complex instability, with or without bone loss, and of rotator cuff tears, developing graft augmentation techniques and focusing on repair and return to normal function.
