Mr Naveed Afzal

Mr. Naveed Afzal is a Lead Consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon based in Dorchester, Dorset. His extensive career includes comprehensive Urology training in the UK, followed by a prestigious Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Stanford University, California. Mr. Afzal specialises in Uro-Oncology and the management of urinary stones, with a primary focus on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

His expertise covers a wide range of procedures, including TRUS biopsies, transperineal template biopsies, and robotic-assisted nerve-sparing Da Vinci radical prostatectomies. He is also proficient in laparoscopic nephrectomies, nephro-ureterectomies, pyeloplasties, PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy), ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy), and Holmium laser treatments. Additionally, Mr. Afzal is highly skilled in High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a technique he trained in London with UKHIFU, and has since successfully administered this treatment to many patients across Dorset.

As a designated "da Vinci Robotic Surgeon," Mr. Afzal and his team have been instrumental in pioneering robotic surgery in West Dorset. He has undergone advanced training under the mentorship of leading robotic surgeons from the UK and Germany. He offers robotic surgery services at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset, performing around 80-90 robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies annually. His innovative approach includes a novel technique for robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), which he presented at the European Robotic Surgery meeting in Milan (ERUS 2016) and later at the European Association of Urology (EAU) conference in 2019.

Mr. Afzal has developed a stone management service in the region, transitioning from open surgery to endoscopic and keyhole procedures. He manages complex staghorn renal calculi locally and treats both upper and lower urinary tract stones. His weekly operating lists include cystolitholapaxy, ureteroscopy, and endoscopic techniques for ureteric stones. He has also established a comprehensive ESWL service.

In the field of endourology, Mr. Afzal performs a wide array of core procedures, including TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate), TURBT (transurethral resection of bladder tumour), optical urethrotomies, ureteroscopies, and other endoscopic interventions. 

Mr. Afzal has pioneered the Transperineal Template Biopsy service in Dorset, introducing advanced techniques for prostate mapping. His experience also includes a wide range of open surgeries and trauma management. As a regional trauma centre, his hospital is equipped to handle severe urological trauma, including renal, bladder, and urethral injuries. He regularly performs open procedures such as radical nephrectomies, radical nephro-ureterectomies, pyeloplasties, and radical retropubic prostatectomies, as well as minor surgeries like hydrocelectomies, circumcisions, and epididymal cyst removals.
