Declan is world class. My outcome could not have been better. Life is normal in every way and was within two weeks of my operation. His standards are very high of himself and that is very comforting. No hesitation in recommending Declan in every way unequivocally,

My journey started with a raised PSA level. Fit, healthy, no symptoms and relatively young, I went on to be diagnosed with a large volume, high grade cancer of the prostate. This was when I was referred to Declan Declan is a calm, upbeat character, he’ll tell you how it is, no sugar coating, just the facts and what he can do, but all the time with a reserved confidence that makes you feel like you’re in the safest pair of hands possible Due to the aggressiveness of the cancer, my options were limited, and I was booked in for a robotic radical prostatectomy at the earliest date possible, dictated by when my biopsy had been carried out My treatment was first class, I knew at every stage what was going to happen and when. Recovery was tough, but the whole time, Declan was available to smooth the process Unfortunately, my cancer had spread to lymph nodes and as Declan put it, ‘we took as many of those out as we could find’. Since surgery a year ago, I’ve had regular check ups and consultations with Declan. He remains as enthusiastic, caring and engaged as the first time I met him. Touch wood, to date the cancer is at bay. Declan says, ‘I guess I got lucky this time’ I do not think luck played any part of it, Declan’s just the best I know my journey’s not yet over and there is still a long way to go, but I definitely picked the right travel companion!

Overall Experience Having been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer by my local NHS hospital during the early stages of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, I was subsequently informed that a surgical procedure would not be possible. I approached Mr Declan Cahill who assessed my condition, then provided advice and reassurance that my case would be would be dealt with professionally and quickly. The robotic procedure was carried out promptly with no unforeseen complications. This I attribute in the main to the skill and expertise demonstrated by Mr Cahill and his team. I would have no reservations in recommending him to carry out this procedure. Bedside Manner Mr Cahill gave me excellent support by telephone, email and in person. His relaxed and friendly approach allayed my apprehensions about having surgery. Due to Covid-19 restrictions I was unable to meet him until the day of surgery but from the phone consultation I developed a real sense of trust in his ability. Explanation He offered me valuable pre-treatment advice together with a video link that proved to be very helpful both prior to and post-surgery. Once I was home he kept in daily phone contact and subsequently replied to my email updates both promptly and reassuringly supporting my recovery.

From my initial phone consultations to the surgery and aftercare, Declan has been truly superb in every respect. He had his work cut out getting me to realise that my expectations of keeping my erectile function did not square with the size of my disease. This was a very difficult moment for me given that I had just separated from my wife and was starting a new relationship. Nevertheless, Declan dealt with my situation with great sensitivity, compassion and good clear advice. I met him for the first time on the day of the operation and he was great to talk to, reassuring, informative, friendly and most importantly humane. The operation went very well and remarkably Declan managed to do nerve saving surgery on the right side of the prostate. This must have been so difficult to achieve given the margin, but I will be forever grateful that he made this call. After surgery, Declan visited me every day in hospital to see how I was feeling and since then has been in touch by email and phone. His skill as a surgeon is remarkable, but it is his brilliant people skills which make him exceptional. He really cares about his patients. I feel very lucky to be under his care.

Explanation

I was diagnosed with Aggressive prostate cancer on 30th June 2016. I was informed it was highly likely the tumour would advance beyond the prostate if I left it untreated for much longer. My options were surgery, or Radiotherapy. Declan was the surgeon recommended to me by my Urologist, Mr. Andrew Ballaro. So, during the morning of Monday, 25th July 2016, at the HCA Healthcare Outpatient Centre, The Shard, London, my wife, and I met with Mr Declan Cahill. Now, my wife and I were not keen on treating my cancer through surgery. Our understanding of the operation; termed a radical prostatectomy, was that it would lead to spending the rest of my life as an incontinent, impotent, bitter, and highly irritable old man, who would be, quite basically, waiting for God. Life would not be worth living. The operation was a ‘non-choice.’ However, during that meeting, and a follow up meeting between just Declan and myself two days later, Declan convinced me surgery through the robotic da Vinci system was the best option for both me and my wife. Declan explained clearly, and with immense compassion, what I would experience through undergoing a radical prostatectomy to treat the aggressive cancerous tumour, that was quite honestly in the process of killing me. Meeting Declan changed my life for the better. Declan operated on me a few weeks later, during the afternoon of Saturday, 20th August at Princes Grace Hospital, Marylebone, London. Declan also oversaw my initial recovery phase. The operation and the following eight weeks were utterly faultless. It was so good that it propelled the rest of my ongoing recovery to be the most positive physical experience I have ever had. I am stronger, fitter, and healthier than I have been in years. I remain in contact with Declan and intend to do so for many years to come! Due entirely to Declan, my experience of being treated for prostate cancer was energising. So much so I fully utilise my experiential learning through voluntary work with the Movember Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK, and Macmillan Cancer Support, plus give awareness talks to a multitude of different organisations. My wife and I cannot praise Declan highly enough. His encyclopaedic knowledge of urology, his craft-like skill as a surgeon and his ability to imbue positivity are immense. The empathy he shares with his patients’, and very importantly their partners, is profound. Hence, I state this unequivocal fact; Declan Cahill is a brilliant surgeon and comes highly recommended.

From the moment I first met Mr Cahill I knew that I could trust him. I had of course done my homework and knew of his reputation and that he was at the leading edge of robotic prostatectomies. He has a very good beside manner and was always reassuring. He was very responsive to my telephone calls and was there to speak to whenever I needed. I was very happy with my treatment and am cancer free for the last 18 months.
