Explanation

I found having Dr. Cahill as my surgeon to be very reassuring. His extensive experience with this procedure, his confident manner and the straightforward way in which he both explained the surgery and dealt with my questions helped greatly to put my mind at ease when choosing between surgery and radiotherapy.

Explanation

Declan is an excellent surgeon and made me feel relaxed before my surgery on 18th Nov 2019 to remove my prostate after cancer being detected in June 2018. The team at the Royal Marsden where my surgery took place, who looked after me, were also excellent. From the nurses in the pre-assessment unit, Declan's theatre team, the nurses in the recovery ward, the nursing and auxiliary staff who looked after me after the op, were all outstanding. I was up and about the day after the op and went home the following day. The first ten days with the catheter in were the worst but was able to walk to our local town for a coffee every day. When the catheter was removed the staples from the wounds were also removed as the wounds were so clean (I kept using the hibiscrub skin cleanser until then - a good tip for others I think). I was able to pass water a little while after the catheter was removed and I did not need any pads (although my wife brought several with us). I cannot thank Declan enough for his excellent work, for the nerve sparing on both sides of the prostate and for saving my life. I made a full recovery and after six weeks returned to work on 2nd Jan 2020. I now have blood tests every three months and another is due. I am more than happy to share my experiences with anyone who is thinking of the same route to surgery in removing prostate cancer. It is good for men to talk about it and share experiences as i did before deciding to have surgery. Thank you Declan

Explanation

I met Declan following my prostate cancer diagnosis and whilst prior to our meeting I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the numerous options during the meeting it became very clear that surgery was the right option given my general health and age (57). I was booked in for surgery 2 months later and from a patients viewpoint everything went to plan - the facilities and the whole team led by Declan at the Marsden in London were top notch and I was discharged by Declan on Saturday morning within 24 hours of surgery. The statistics show that Declan is one of the very highest rated prostate cancer surgeons in the country but it is only when you get to meet him and go through a process from beginning to end that you can really tell what a fabulous all round surgeon he is
