From the moment I first met Mr Cahill I knew that I could trust him. I had of course done my homework and knew of his reputation and that he was at the leading edge of robotic prostatectomies. He has a very good beside manner and was always reassuring. He was very responsive to my telephone calls and was there to speak to whenever I needed. I was very happy with my treatment and am cancer free for the last 18 months.

I was lucky enough to be treated by Mr Cahill for prostate cancer and felt reassured by his clear explanation of options, outcomes and risks during initial consultations. The selected surgery went well and at present am in full remission. Post operative communication and support was excellent - thank you Mr Cahill.

Explanation

I was diagnosed with Aggressive prostate cancer on 30th June 2016. I was informed it was highly likely the tumour would advance beyond the prostate if I left it untreated for much longer. My options were surgery, or Radiotherapy. Declan was the surgeon recommended to me by my Urologist, Mr. Andrew Ballaro. So, during the morning of Monday, 25th July 2016, at the HCA Healthcare Outpatient Centre, The Shard, London, my wife, and I met with Mr Declan Cahill. Now, my wife and I were not keen on treating my cancer through surgery. Our understanding of the operation; termed a radical prostatectomy, was that it would lead to spending the rest of my life as an incontinent, impotent, bitter, and highly irritable old man, who would be, quite basically, waiting for God. Life would not be worth living. The operation was a ‘non-choice.’ However, during that meeting, and a follow up meeting between just Declan and myself two days later, Declan convinced me surgery through the robotic da Vinci system was the best option for both me and my wife. Declan explained clearly, and with immense compassion, what I would experience through undergoing a radical prostatectomy to treat the aggressive cancerous tumour, that was quite honestly in the process of killing me. Meeting Declan changed my life for the better. Declan operated on me a few weeks later, during the afternoon of Saturday, 20th August at Princes Grace Hospital, Marylebone, London. Declan also oversaw my initial recovery phase. The operation and the following eight weeks were utterly faultless. It was so good that it propelled the rest of my ongoing recovery to be the most positive physical experience I have ever had. I am stronger, fitter, and healthier than I have been in years. I remain in contact with Declan and intend to do so for many years to come! Due entirely to Declan, my experience of being treated for prostate cancer was energising. So much so I fully utilise my experiential learning through voluntary work with the Movember Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK, and Macmillan Cancer Support, plus give awareness talks to a multitude of different organisations. My wife and I cannot praise Declan highly enough. His encyclopaedic knowledge of urology, his craft-like skill as a surgeon and his ability to imbue positivity are immense. The empathy he shares with his patients’, and very importantly their partners, is profound. Hence, I state this unequivocal fact; Declan Cahill is a brilliant surgeon and comes highly recommended.

Highly professional and no-nonsense approach. Took the time to explain my condition and proposed surgical procedure in detail, including referring me to other professionals for consideration of alternative treatment options.

From the first chat with Dr. Cahill I felt totaly at ease, he told me straight what may be the outcome of the Prostatectomy along with an added bit of humour. He also took care of my inguinal hernia at the same time. Great job, well at least so far ! Would highly recommend.

Being diagnosed with cancer is quite a shock which was to some extent mitigated by the prompt professionalism of the rapid diagnosis unit. Once diagnosed however and presented with three possible treatments with little, in fact no advice on which was appropriate I felt the system lacked clarity. Of the three specialists to whom I was referred only Mr Cahill was able/prepared to make a convincing case for his particular procedure. Not withstanding that and the extremely informative lecture I attended I have been surprised how very depressing I have found the resulting impotence. The incontinence improves daily. Once I had elected for radical surgery the pre and post op treatment was excellent until it came to the appointment to remove the catheter. Unlike the rest of the Royal Marsden experience this was borderline chaotic and from a patient perspective lacked management. In my case the operation has apparently been successful . Huge thanks to all involved.

Thank you for your contribution. This is an important issue. Impotence following radical prostatectomy may occur in 20% of men who we think really won’t result in this versus the other end of the spectrum where almost all men get it. If the erections are perfect before, no issues such as high blood pressure or diabetes, both nerves spared 8/10 will recover. With bad erections before or with the nerves and blood vessels removed with the prostate to clear the cancer most men suffer from impotence. Certain treatments favour potency over cancer management without or with compromise with in cure or recurrence. However well counselled about risk is binary. It will or won’t happen. There are solutions. Acceptability is patient dependant. Everyone is different. Many very different. This review is anonymous so I don’t know who it is from. I hope we are working towards a solution. I very much sympathise with your regret.

From the first consultation, to a cancer diagnosis and treatment, Mr Cahill outlined everything clearly and with empathy. All the options were put forward with pro’s and cons, likely outcomes and what to expect. He is a hugely experienced surgeon. The post surgery care has been just as good.
