About

Mr Alex von Roon is a skilled laparoscopic colorectal surgeon with over 15 years of experience in treating patients with colorectal and general surgical conditions. At his NHS base at University College London Hospitals, he specialises in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and advanced minimally invasive techniques. He regularly performs complex re-operative surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure and abdominal wall reconstruction. He frequently operates jointly with consultant colleagues from gynaecology and urology, supporting them in their tertiary referral practice treating severe endometriosis, gynaecological malignancy and complex urology.

He started transitioning from laparoscopic to robotic surgery in 2020 and is the co-implementation lead for the robotic colorectal surgery programme at UCLH. He is also Clinical Director of General Surgery at King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone.

Mr von Roon provides care that is informed by the latest surgical techniques, tailored to the specific needs of the individual and delivered in a sensitive manner. He believes that a minimally invasive approach should not just be applied to headline diseases like colorectal cancer and

inflammatory bowel disease, but also to more straightforward conditions such as haemorrhoids, anal fistula, pilonidal sinus and hernias, where novel techniques can be very effective whilst causing less tissue trauma and pain than traditional procedures.

He trained in general and colorectal surgery on the prestigious London Northwest Thames training rotation. He received a research fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008 and was awarded a PhD by Imperial College London in 2012. He underwent further subspecialist training in colorectal surgery in Adelaide, Australia and St Mark's Hospital

before being appointed Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals in 2015. During this time, he started specialising in inflammatory bowel disease surgery, became clinical lead for enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery and trained on the Senhance robotic surgery platform. In 2019, he moved to University College London

Hospital, where he continues to develop his interests in minimally invasive techniques and robotic surgery.

He undertook his PhD research at Imperial College in collaboration with St Mark's Hospital, focusing on outcomes of ileoanal pouch surgery for familial adenomatous polyposis and metabonomic profiling of pouchitis in ulcerative colitis. He supervises several PhD students in collaboration with the Polyposis Registry at St Mark's Hospital. He has an interest in evidence synthesis in inflammatory bowel disease and surgical trials. He regulary gives lectures on the surgical management of IBD. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers in the field of colorectal surgery and is a reviewer for a number of surgical journals.

Explanation

He’s very professional, patient and friendly. He took his time to explain the procedure in great detail to the level of my understanding. He did a perfect job with the procedure and the level of care he put in place for me during my post operative care was excellent. Over all I would say, I was blessed to have him as my consultant.

Mr von Roon is an outstanding surgeon and clinician with whom I've been fortunate enough to work with over a number of years. He has a well-earned reputation for a deep knowledge and skill-base in complex abdominal, as well as general, surgery. I have asked his opinion on a number of my patients and indeed he has operated on many also (including many patients with complex conditions) - all with excellent outcomes and experience. His bedside manner and communications skills with patients, relatives and colleagues is second to none. I would recommend him highly.
