A few years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed several years of intense treatment. Whilst most people today talk quite openly about cancer because they or someone close has gone through it, they rarely talk in detail of side effects or living with a body that has changed from the treatment. This is what I want to share as part of my cancer journey. I’m not talking about hair loss, the common devastating side effect because it is so visible to others or ourselves in the mirror. I want to tell you about one of the side effects I’ve suffered from which is severe vaginal dryness and discomfort from the drugs I’m on. It’s the last taboo, one I’ve noticed that women even close friends or family don’t easily talk about and therefore suffer in silence, because it is such an intimate part of our anatomy. It is unseen and private, but oh so painful. But I did not want to suffer in silence, I wanted to be heard and I wanted help. I was lucky enough to be recommended to MissTania Adib - consultant gynaecologist. Miss Tania Adib is a wonderful, compassionate listener who immediately understood my dilemma, with her help she created a treatment plan for me of vaginal laser “The MonaLisa Touch” together with hyaluronic acid injections. The results have gone beyond my expectations and transformed me back to my old self, giving me confidence and feeling feminine once again. I’m 22, and three years ago I started getting really intense vulvar problems, which started after I went on the pill. I was having burning discomfort every month before my period, my skin was brittle and tearing every time I had sex, and my vestible was so sore sex was practically impossible. At 20 years old everyone I had seen about it was stumped, and I was getting referred for STI tests and prescribed thrush treatments that would always come up with nothing and wouldn’t help. I was getting nowhere with over the counter creams and lubricants and was feeling completely broken and defeated. When I saw Miss Adib, she examined me and pretty much immediately diagnosed me with vestibulodynia (caused by hormonal imbalance) and BV. She and prescribed antihistamines and antibiotics for the BV, which has not returned since, and hormone cream for the vestibulodynia. She assured me that I would get better and be able to have painless sex again but I honestly didn’t see how that could happen, I really thought i’d be in pain forever and would never have comfortable sex again. Three years on, and now i’m back to almost normal! Sex is completely painless 9 times out of 10 which feels like a miracle which means mine and my partner’s anxiety around the bedroom has completely gone, and we feel normal again. I now only go to the medical chambers once a year for check ups, and she is always so lovely and personable, and considerate of my overall wellbeing: that includes my pain, my sex life, contraception and fertility. She has honestly turned my life around I cannot recommend her enough if you are having seemingly unexplained vulvar/vestibular/vaginal pain, discomfort or symptoms.

Miss Adib is at the top of her game. She doesn’t “over” prescribe hormones, everything is done in a considered manner. Regular blood tests etc to ensure you are on the perfect combination of hormones. Highly recommended.

It has been wonderful to feel supported and understood by Miss Adib who has followed me for the last year. When I first came to see her, I felt desperate and misunderstood - I had seen various doctors but none had really 'heard' me. She took the time to explain everything about perimenopause & menopause which was really useful. She has been able to put together a very bespoke treatment and adapt it regularly as required.
