Professor John Dunning is a renowned consultant cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon, currently working at Harefield Hospital where he treats both NHS and private patients. With an impressive education background, Professor Dunning was schooled in Edinburgh and received a BSc. in 1981 and an M.B., Ch.B. in 1984. He then completed his general surgical training in Manchester and Leicester, followed by specialist cardiothoracic training at hospitals in Leicester, Cambridgeshire, and Oxford.

Professor Dunning has worked at several hospitals throughout his career, including Papworth Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, and Tampa General Hospital, where he served as surgical director of heart and lung transplantation and endowed professor of cardiovascular research. He returned to the UK in November 2021 to work as director of the cardiothoracic transplantation & mechanical circulatory support service at Harefield Hospital.

As an expert in adult cardiothoracic surgery, Professor Dunning has a special interest in cardiopulmonary transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and surgery of the great vessels. He has performed numerous cardiac surgical procedures, such as coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, aortic surgery, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support using short- and long-term VAD therapy.

Professor Dunning has also authored over 130 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and editorials, as well as contributed to various book chapters. He is regularly invited to present his scientific work at national and international meetings and has served on the examination panels for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in the UK and Australia.
