Mrs Sheela Purkayastha is a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with over 36 years' experience working in the field. Dr Purkayastha is also recognised by The British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology as a Specialist in Colposcopy, She is an instructor in Family Planning with accreditation from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Wide experience in Menopausal problems and had experience in running the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Menopause and PMS Clinic for many years. She is keen to solve the postmenopausal vulvovaginal problems without HRT to help women who do not wish to use HRT. She was the sole author of the book titled Postreproductive Gynaecology.
She has special interst in PCOS and premenstrual syndromme (PMDD).Premature menopause (POF) is another of her subspeciality. Dr Purkayastha considers conservative treatment for various gynaecological problems before recommending surgery. Many women seek second opinion from her in case they can be treated without surgery as advised previously by other gynaecologists.
Dr Purkayastha graduated from The Calcutta Medical College in India and her academic achievements included a National Scholarship and the Maharaja Gwalior Gold Medal for top marks in exams as part of her medical and surgical degree course. She then went on to study at postgraduate level at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, where she achieved her Doctor of Medicine Qualification.
After working in Iran as a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for several years, Dr Purkayastha moved to the UK and passed the exam for Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1982. Dr Purkayastha was then granted Fellowship of the Royal College in 1997 and Fellow of the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health in 2006.
