Dr Ramkumar is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in non-surgical treatment with chemotherapy, high precision radiotherapy and immunotherapy of Head and Neck Cancer, Skull Base Tumours, skin cancers, and GI cancers since 2009 based in Southampton and has special interests in Proton Beam Therapy(PBT) for re-irradiation for complex recurrent cancers. He completed Oncology training in India in 1997 and further Clinical Oncology specialist training in Wessex Clinical Oncology Training Scheme, UK in 2009. He has completed 5 Fellowship Training programs in Proton Beam therapy in USA and Europe and 3 Fellowship training programs in Intraoperative Radiotherapy in Europe and North America and Carbon Ion Therapy(CIT) Fellowship at CANO, Italy.
Dr Ramkumar held leadership roles in Post Graduate Medical Training (Training Programme Director, RCR College Tutor, RCR Speciality Training Board Member, RCR Curriculum Committee Member, National Recruitment Steering Group, RCR Faculty Board Member), Technical Lead roles (IMRT Lead, IORT Lead, Clinical Governance Lead, Stereotactic radiotherapy lead), Management roles (Clinical Leaders Forum Board Member-Genesis Care, UK, Medical Director-Proton Therapy UK) and National e-Proton Steering Group Member. He is a Specialist Advisor for the Quality Care Commission, Expert Reviewer for the National Institute for Health Research Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), Reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Senate Member of the Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for Complex Head & Neck cancer & National Cancer Peer Review Panel Member (Quality Surveillance Team).
Dr Ramkumar is currently the Clinical Lead for Thames Valley & Wessex Operational Delivery Network for NHS England, was a Member of the Radiotherapy Clinical Reference Group for NHS England & NHS Improvement, Clinical Expert for Technological Appraisal for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), External Clinical advisor for Parliamentary & Health Ombudsman and Chair-Head and Neck cancer for Wessex Strategic Clinical Network. He is final FRCR Examiner at the Royal College of Radiologists and FRCR Examination Board Member and was on the Public Engagement Committee of the British Association of Head & Neck Oncologists. He was co-chair of the Education sub-committee for GI cancers at the International Particle Therapy Co-operative Group (PTCOG) and is currently a committee member for H&N, Skull base tumours, sarcomas and CNS. He is also on the Steering Group for PTCOG.
Dr Ramkumar is Principal Investigator for several national & International Clinical Trials in Head & Neck cancers involving Immunotherapy and radiotherapy and in the Trial Management Group for several clinical trials. He is a project Consultant for Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) studies at the University of Hong Kong. He pioneered the implementation of Low-Level Laser Therapy for treating cancer treatment-related toxicities and Intraoperative Electron Radiotherapy (IOERT) for cancer treatment in the UK.
Dr Ramkumar was Senior Medical Advisor and Lead Clinician-Proton Therapy for Rutherford Cancer Centre until June 2022 and is now the Medical Director for Proton Therapy UK. He is keen to improve cancer outcomes with newer cancer treatments and reduce cancer treatment-related toxicities.
