He then undertook specialist medical training in rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine and sport and exercise medicine in units across London. During his training period, he undertook a research degree and after 3 years was awarded Medical Doctorate for his work on Exercise and Osteoporosis. He was also later awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, in which he studied sport and exercise medicine in North America. He was appointed to his first consultant role in 1994 at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and additionally was appointed to the first position of Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine in the UK.
