About

Professor Richard Watts has 26 years' experience as a consultant rheumatologist practising at Nuffield Health Ipswich and Ipswich Hospital, having trained in Oxford, Middlesex Hospital, Cambridge and Norwich. He holds an honorary chair at Norwich Medical School University of East Anglia.

He diagnoses and treats a wide range of rheumatological and musculoskeletal conditions. He is able to arrange and interpret a wide range of investigations including blood tests for arthritis, X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and ultrasound and bone density scans.

He has a number of special interests including vasculitis, connective tissue diseases, joint inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis) and gout. He regularly sees patients with polymyalgia rheumatica, fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. He regularly performs a variety of injections into joints and soft tissues including carpal tunnel, bursitis and tennis elbow.

He is a medical advisor to the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS), Vasculitis UK and has been a clinical advisor to Arthritis Research Campaign (now Arthritis Research UK).

He was previously Editor-in-Chief of Rheumatology and Editor of the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology.

Outside rheumatology his interests include skiing, mountain walking, gardening and steam engines.
