Dr. McKenna is a Clinical Psychologist with a special interest in the treatment of tinnitus and insomnia. He graduated from the University of Liverpool and obtained a PhD from The City University on the topic of psychological aspects of tinnitus and hearing loss. From then he continued to enhance his knowledge and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma (with distinction ) in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at the University of Oxford.
Dr. Mckenna has years of experience in his field of psychology applied to audiology; he has worked at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital for over 3 decades, allowing him to greatly develop his understanding of psychological care within the care of patients with audiological problems. He has also worked within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for 27 years. Recently, he has worked towards developing the application of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in the care of patients with distressing tinnitus.
Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Mckenna holds honorary academic positions at University College London, is a member of the faculty of the European Tinnitus Course and was a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of the British Tinnitus Association.
His expertise has been recognized over the years as in 2010 and 2015, he was awarded the British Tinnitus Association Jack Shapiro Prize for the best academic paper on tinnitus from a UK Institution. In 2011 he was awarded The British Society of Audiology Thomas Simm Littler prize for an outstanding academic contribution to audiology.
