    About

Dr Kalpa De Silva qualified from St. Bartholomew's & The Royal London Medical School in 2004, and subsequently obtained a PhD in cardiovascular medicine from King’s College London in 2014. He is a consultant interventional cardiologist, practicing in the NHS (at the Bristol Heart Institute) and privately (at the Spire Bristol Hospital). His general and interventional cardiology training was undertaken at King’s College and St Thomas’s Hospitals, London; whilst also completing an international fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia.

He is experienced in a range of cardiac conditions, and has a particular interest in the treatment of coronary artery disease. He specialises in managing coronary disease using minimally invasive percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) techniques. He is interested in optimising his patients’ outcomes by using physiology and imaging modalities and treats patients with complex coronary disease including multi-vessel disease and chronic total occlusions.

Dr De Silva remains active in academic research within his field. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol and was previously a nominee for the American College of Cardiology’s young investigator award. His research interests include the management of heart attacks, angina and cardiogenic shock, as well as the use of mechanical circulatory support to assist during stenting procedures. He has published in excess of 50 peer-reviewed journals, and has co-authored books on a variety of topics in interventional cardiology.  He is also a regular invitee to leading national and international conferences.

Dr Kalpa de Silva is both an empathetic and very knowledgeable Cardiologist who has been invaluable in the management and improving my understanding of my heart problems (micro-vascular angina) He has also been very helpful in advising my local hospital and GP in how to help me with both acute and long term treatment of this poorly understood condition. I am very grateful to have found him.

The service I received was excellent. It very professional, competent and thorough. I was grateful for the clear explanation for and information is given to me about my condition. I was also extremely grateful for the arrangments which Dr De Silva made to have me transferred to the BHI after my condition had deteriorated. This required heart bypass surgery and I am now recovering well. Thank you for all your help.

Particularly positive for me is your willingness to give me a technical picture of my health situation. In particular your analysis, which you have described in terms sympathetic to my level of understanding/knowledge - or lack of it. Copies of letters to my GP. have helped. Overall I have felt confident & comfortable with your care, & don't have any negative comment.
