About

Dr Iyad Ismail is a Respiratory Consultant, graduated from Jordan University of Science & Technology in 2000, after being awarded a merit scholarship throughout medical school by the United Nations (UNRWA). He completed his training in the UK (CCT) in respiratory and general medicine in 2014 and complemented that with a fellowship in interventional procedures from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Dr Iyad Ismail's overseas experience has helped him work in the NHS in many ways. Working in Jordan, a country known for its limited resources, meant he had to provide best and safest possible patient care with the available logistics.

Dr Ismail is constantly self-critical of his practice against patient outcomes. This has helped him develop and refine both his skills and knowledge.

Dr Ismail was appointed at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in February 2015. Since then he has thrived to introduce innovative practice in respiratory medicine including remote monitoring of sleep patients, a dedicated outpatient pleural disease clinic, ambulatory management of pneumothorax and outpatient non-invasive ventilation (NIV) set ups. He was appointed as a lung cancer lead in December 2015 at Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and has made a big impact on the local lung cancer pathway to deliver high quality care to local patients.

Dr Ismail has a special interest in assessment of breathlessness and large airway diseases including excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) and tracheobronchomalacia (TBM). These conditions can be misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD.
