Dr Iqbal Khan works as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust since his appointment in 2007. He previously served as the lead consultant for Endoscopy and Gastroenterology services at the Trust and was responsible for the smooth running of an extremely busy endoscopy unit, serving a population approaching half a million people (including the care of patients with GI cancer). He is particularly passionate about Endoscopy Governance, which ensures that the care delivered to patients is of the highest possible standard. He is now the clinical lead for endoscopy services at the BMI Three Shires Hospital.
Dr Khan's medical practice includes all aspects of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General (internal) Medicine. This especially includes the investigation and management of GI cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease and Colitis), abdominal pain, liver disease, pancreatic disease, altered bowel habit (including irritable bowel syndrome), nutritional problems and weight change.
He has a special interest in GI cancer and endoscopy and as a result of this is highly skilled in endoscopy work. This includes the placement of feeding tubes, stricture dilatation, stent placement, polypectomy, variceal banding and ERCP. He has carried out over 15,000 procedures.
Dr Khan is also passionate about medical education and training future doctors. He was the Associate Director of Medical Education at Northampton General Hospital for 12 years and held educational roles including Honorary Senior Lecturer posts with the Universities of Oxford and Leicester Medical Schools. He has written several books, book chapters and multiple scientific papers.
Dr Khan was born and educated in Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Sheffield with a medical degree (MBChB) a BSc (Dual Hons) and PhD – investigating the mechanisms by which patients experience abdominal pain and nausea symptoms. His specialist training prior to his consultant post involved working at most of the major hospitals in the West Midlands. He now lives in Northamptonshire with his wife and three children.

This is a well-established course designed for clinicians involved in education and training of undergraduates and postgraduates.
