Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Henry Colaço specialises in sports and reconstructive shoulder and elbow surgery, as well as complex upper limb trauma (including hand and wrist). He has experience in treating high-profile actors, directors, musicians, and professional athletes from international rugby players to UFC fighters.

He takes a patient-centred approach to care, tailoring his treatments (both surgical and non-surgical) to each individual. Where surgery is required, he uses cutting-edge procedures and uses minimally invasive techniques wherever possible to obtain the best outcomes and a faster recovery time. Mr Colaço has a particular interest in reconstructive arthroscopic (keyhole) surgical procedures for the treatment of bone loss in shoulder instability, irrepairable rotator cuff tears, and biceps tendon injuries.

Mr Colaço completed his surgical and orthopaedic training in London after graduating with distinction from Imperial College School of Medicine. He completed two fellowships in shoulder and elbow surgery and complex upper limb surgery and was awarded the renowned BESS Travelling Fellowship, which he completed in Paris and Lyon. He is the Clinical Lead for Upper Limb Surgery at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Surgical Lead for sustainability. He is a founding member of The Shoulder Practice and The London Shoulder Meeting. He is widely published, teaches at national and international conferences and is actively involved in clinical research and the use of simulation to train junior surgeons.

I have suffered for years with shoulder pain, had decompression surgery which helped some pain, but kept going back to surgeon outlining that I was still in pain. Several injections, several scans did not fix or identify any further issues. I then went to see Henry Colaco, who after examination and tests found a tear that he believed was the issue. Surgery followed soon after, and now 11 weeks to the day post surgery, I am delighted to say I am back training, and more importantly not in pain. I can’t thank Henry enough, he took time to listen, examine and then ran through the options. On the day of surgery he explained very clearly what he would be doing and what the potential outcomes would be. I spent 4 weeks in a sling, only removing to shower, then extensive physio at Henry’s guidance and today after seeing him (hopefully for the last time) he was happy to sign me off. If you have pain and can’t get to the bottom of it or are dismissed by others, you need to go see Henry, indeed, don’t wait to be dismissed, go see him 1st!

Mr Colaco repaired my badly broken shoulder in April 2022. I felt in safe hands from the outset. He was sympathetic but business-like, explained everything fully, performed expert surgery, and followed up meticulously, including referring me to an excellent physiotherapist. After 3 months I am completely recovered for all practical purposes.

"Mr Colaço is a much valued colleague in The Shoulder Practice. We refer patients when sensible to do so in view of our complementary skills and experience. Mr Colaço has a very rational, reasoned, logical and evidence-based approach to decision-making in the spectrum of cases with which he is involved, and brings challenging cases for good discussions at our multidisciplinary meetings. I have been grateful for his advice on a number of occasions and have enjoyed working with him in teh operating theatre."
