Dr David Bloomfield is a specialist in the management of breast and urological cancer. His time in a Clinical Research Fellowship in Canada has had a big influence on his medical interest, where he had the opportunity to study clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto, concentrating on the effectiveness of treatments and developing clinical research trials.
Dr. Bloomfield's specialist training was at University College Hospital London and the Royal Marsden. He was appointed to a Consultant Clinical Oncologist post in Sussex in 1998. In 2001 Dr Bloomfield set up the Sussex Cancer Research Network. He has led Oncology as Head of Department since 2004 and then appointed to Principal Lead Clinician for Cancer Services at BSUH in 2006.
Dr Bloomfield has a longstanding interest in teaching; The MSc in Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research that he set up as joint Course Director in 2006 has gone from strength to strength. It currently educates about half of the UK oncology specialists. He has also been keen to introduce oncology to the medical students at Brighton & Sussex Medical School early in their clinical studies; with a strong interest in improving the curriculum wherever possible.
Dr Bloomfield’s main interest is spending time with his family. They share a range of interests in music, outdoor pursuits such as hill walking, rock climbing and horse riding.
