Dr Allan Harkness is a Consultant Cardiologist based in
Colchester seeing patients from across Essex and Suffolk. His main clinic is at
The Oaks Hospital in Colchester.
His practice covers the whole spectrum of adult cardiology
including chest pain, breathlessness, heart failure, high blood pressure,
murmurs, blackouts and palpitations. His comprehensive training in Glasgow and
London resulted in accreditation in both Cardiology and General Medicine. He
can therefore offer a more holistic review when considering problems relating
to your heart.
Dr Harkness has been a Consultant Cardiologist at Colchester
Hospital since 2006 and at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre since it opened in
2007.
In 2010, he became the Clinical Lead for Cardiology at
Colchester Hospital. He led the introduction of many advances in cardiology
services, including valve clinics, heart failure services, MRI compatible
pacemakers, implantable loop recorders, stress echo, transoesophageal echo, 3D
echo and CT coronary angiography. He is accredited in echocardiography
(transthoracic and transoesophageal) with the British Society of
Echocardiography and in CT Angiography with the British Society of
Cardiovascular Imaging.
In 2017, Dr Harkness became the Divisional Director for
Medicine and Emergency Care at Colchester Hospital. He continued in this role
for two three-year terms of office, covering the merger with Ipswich Hospital and
the Pandemic. In 2023, he was appointed Deputy Associate Medical Director for
Patient Safety.
These lead roles have given him the perspective to
continually improve both his practice and the standards of care where he works.
This is reflected in his patient feedback.
Dr Harkness is an active member of the Education Committee
of the British Society of Echocardiography, contributing to guideline
development and training programmes. In 2019, in recognition of his
contribution to education, research, leadership, volunteering and national reputation,
he was awarded Fellowship of the British Society of Echocardiography. In 2021, in
recognition of his service and contribution to the advancement of
echocardiography, the society presented him with their 2021 Lifetime Achievement
Award.

Very professional and explained the next steps easily

Dr Harkness explained everything clearly, giving me plenty of opportunities to ask questions. During the appointment (which was on time) it felt like I had plenty of time and I felt confident with his diagnosis. Dr Harkness is very approachable and friendly. My initial enquiry was an email sent to Claire, his medical secretary. She got back to me immediately with possible appointment times and in subsequent emails was friendly, prompt and organised. Altogether a great experience and I will be going back if I need to and would highly recommend Dr Harkness to others.

Timely, informative and reassuring

I was quite anxious before I met Dr Harkness because of my heart history and how I would explain what I've been experiencing recently. He was easy to talk to and I felt reassured by what he said. I require further tests but feel happy that I am in very capable hands.
