Top feedback

“Dr Humphries was really excellent both at the consultation stage and then at the time of carrying out my gastroscopy. He has a caring and attentive bedside manner and explained both the procedure and the results calmly but in detail. It didn’t feel in any way rushed. He communicated well throughout the procedure, including as to how much longer it would take. It’s not a pleasant procedure but it was far better than I feared, even without sedation. “

    About

Dr Adam Humphries, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist, works within St Mark’s Hospital in Harrow, London. He is highly specialised in endoscopy (including video capsule and trans-nasal), bowel cancer screening and prevention, colonoscopy and polypectomy, gastroscopy, small bowel diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and double-balloon enteroscopy.

Dr Humphries graduated from Imperial College Medical School in 2002, before undertaking his specialist training in gastroenterology in hospitals throughout London from 2005-2013. He was later awarded a fellowship at St Mark’s hospital focusing on advanced and small bowel endoscopy. He underwent additional fellowships including the Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Fellowship that was awarded to him in 2007. He was later given a PhD for his work during this fellowship by University College London. Since being appointed to his current position he has also become the Clinical Lead for Endoscopy in his NHS Trust and has established a small bowel endoscopy service, one of the few services in the UK to provide double-balloon enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases.

Dr Humphries remains an active researcher, publishing regularly in high-impact medical journals, presenting his findings at international conferences, and publishing several book chapters. He currently researches bowel cancer prevention, the evolution of pre-cancerous growths (polyps) within the gut, and the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases.

Dr Humphries' informal manner and obvious professional excellence put me at ease immediately. He listened closely, asked interesting and informed questions and was comprehensive in discussing the possible causes of and solutions to the issues I'd come to see him about. He covered a wide field, exploring all possibilities, and was clear and pragmatic throughout. I left feeling that I had had the best possible consultation and advice, and this was borne out by the absolutely outstanding letter which I had from him, copied to my GP, summarising our session and outlining possible ways forward.

Dr Humphries was very patient and took as much time as was required in advance to explain the procedure and answer any questions I had, ensured the correct sedation was given so that I was comfortable throughout and explained what was happening both during the procedure and afterwards and then showed and explained to me a copy of his report before I was discharged.
