Dr Angela Huertas-Ceballos

Dr Angela Huertas-Ceballos (Huertas) is a Consultant in Neonatology, based at University College Hospital London and she also sees patients privately, including at The Portland Hospital. She is the Lead Clinician for the neurodevelopment follow up service for babies at risk of developmental problems, the Lead of the Neonatal Nutrition multidisciplinary team and the Lead of the Developmental Care multidisciplinary team at UCLH and the North Central Perinatal Network.

She trained in general medicine, paediatrics, neonatal medicine and development and neonatal neurology in Columbia and the UK. Dr Huertas is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Honorary Secretary of the Outcomes group at the Thames Regional Perinatal Group and the Regional Advisor for the North Centre Thames at the Royal College. She is the only NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program) trained doctor in the UK at present.

In addition, her work of more than 10 years at UCLH has inspired doctors from many other neonatal units and perinatal networks to continue monitoring babies after discharge at least until two years of age. She is the co-author of the two-year questionnaire added to the Standardised Electronic Neonatal Database (SEND) currently in use by all units in England as a measure of quality of neonatal care. Her research also provides outcome data for studies on extreme preterm babies and babies with neonatal encephalopathy and is aimed at Neuroprotection and improvement of developmental outcomes.
