Mr Gregory Thomas is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. He qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine (St Mary Hospital) in 2003 with a distinction in surgery and an intercalated BSc from Imperial College, London. His basic surgery training was undertaken at St Mary Hospital and in the Northwest London region.

Mr Thomas received specialist general and colorectal training in Southwest London and Surrey. He undertook two years of research into pelvic floor disorders at St Mark Hospital (a world renowned hospital for bowel disorders) and was awarded a post-graduate research degree (MD) from Imperial College, London. He has maintained a strong ongoing research interest in this field. He has published over 40 peer reviewed papers and four text book chapters on pelvic floor and colorectal disorders. He has presented widely on these subjects at national and international meetings.

He was awarded a travelling fellowship from the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland in 2016, and has spent time at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Hospitals in Florida and Ohio, and at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nantes, France. He received the FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2016. Prior to his appointment to Ashford and St Peter , Mr Thomas spent a further year at St Mark Hospital as a Resident Surgical Officer for higher post graduate training. He was previously a consultant colorectal surgeon at Ashford and St Peter's NHS Trust.

Omar Faiz is the Clinical Director and a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark's Hospital and Professor of Practice in Colorectal Surgery at Imperial College.

His areas of clinical interest within colorectal surgery are the surgical management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), hereditary cancer syndromes, colorectal cancer and proctology.

He trained in General and colorectal Surgery within London and the South East of England and undertook specialist colorectal fellowships at St Mark’s Hospital and Valencia University Hospital prior to taking up a consultant post at Imperial College in 2008 (St Mary’s Campus) and then taking up a consultant position at St Mark’s hospital in 2012.


Professor Faiz has wide research interests and he has supervised 20 PhD and MD research fellows at Imperial College. His principal research interests include colorectal surgical epidemiology, health services research and surgical outcome research. He has authored 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored 11 book chapters and three text books.


Professor Faiz holds, or has held, various leadership positions at a national level. He is the ex-Chairman of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) IBD subcommittee and Chair of the national Ileal Pouch Registry. He has contributed twice towards guideline development for the 'IBD Standards' and also NICE in 2015. Prof. Faiz has Chaired an international gastrointestinal surgery initiative of Global Comparators - a benchmarking and quality improvement group comprising sixty highly recognised worldwide academic hospitals (2014-2018).


He currently represents the ACPGBI on the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Standards board and is the Lead for IBD Surgery for the ACPGBI. He is currently on the Board of Surgical-European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (S-ECCO) and is an Associate Editor for the journal Colorectal Disease.


In 2018 the Daily Mail published a Good Doctors Guide for IBD, compiled through clinical peer consensus, where Professor Faiz was listed and described as 'a very good, high volume surgeon at a major centre, supported by an excellent team.

Training posts in London followed and a PhD at Cancer Research UK concentrating on stem cell biology and pancreatic cancer.

Dr Direkze is experienced in the assessment, diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer and the management of IBS. She is an experienced endoscopist and performs gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy. Direkzeis a National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme accredited colonoscopist and is looking forward to developing her roles in research and teaching at St Mary's.

Professor Peter Garrard directs the dementia research group at St George’s, University of London Neuroscience Research Centre (Molecular and Clinical Sciences Research Institute) focused on language change in dementia, computational linguistics, imaging correlates of progressive aphasia and the molecular mechanisms of pathology in frontotemporal dementia. He specialises in neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative dementia, cognitive disorders, progressive language disorders, early-onset dementia and frontotemporal dementia.

Professor Garrard graduated from the University of Oxford in 1985, proceeding to earn an MD ChB in 1990 from the University of Bristol and a PhD in 1999 from the University of Cambridge.

He took up a post as a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in 2001, subsequently moving to a similar post at the Royal Free Hospital from 2005 - 2007. He became a consultant neurologist at Southampton General Hospital in 2007 for three years.

Professor Garrard has also been involved in academic roles, in his capacity as a senior lecturer in clinical neuroscience at University College London from 2001 to 2007, as well as a reader in neurology at the University of Southampton from 2007-2010. Since 2010, he has been a reader and then Professor in neurology at St George's, University of London.
