Urological Oncology

Mr Marc Laniado is an excellent Consultant Urological surgeon and the prostate cancer chairman of the prostate cancer multidisciplinary team at the HCA Princess Grace Hospital. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate cancer and urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate (BPH). He offers an individualised approach, tailoring the tests or treatments to the specific values of the man he sees.

For men with urinary symptoms due to BPH, Marc Laniado advises men on lifestyle changes and medications. Where these are unsuccessful, he performs day-case procedures that alleviate urinary symptoms keeping ejaculation (UroLift, Rezum). Some men have unsuitable prostates and need a HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) or Aquablation, which can also preserve erections and ejaculation. Mr Laniado uses an en-bloc technique with early apical sphincter release and a Moses 2.0 holmium laser at the Princess Grace Hospital for best results.

To help men have fewer side effects from radiotherapy, He does SpaceOAR/Barrigel insertions under local anaesthetic.

Prostate cancer is increasingly common and many men are diagnosed with small cancer potentially suitable for partial ablation, which is also known as focal therapy. For appropriate men, Mr Laniado performs High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which preserves continence and erections in most men. He started HIFU in 2005.

Mr Laniado trained in open prostatectomy, started laparoscopic prostatectomies in 2006 and moved onto robotic prostatectomies in 2008/9. He switched from the anterior approach for robotic prostatectomy to the Retzius-sparing technique at the end of 2016. Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, in his experience, allows men to quickly recover bladder control and preserve the structures needed for an erection.

Mr Laniado trains other surgeons in robotic prostatectomy in the European School at Royal Berkshire Hospital. He has driven the development of multiparametric MRI and MRI-targeted fusion biopsies of the prostate to diagnose men accurately. He started MRI-targeted biopsies in 2012 and does over two hundred MRI-targeted fusion biopsies a year. He introduced Retzius sparing prostatectomy at the end of 2016 as his preserved surgical technique as patients recover bladder control and erections faster than normal technique. He does about 100 Retzius-sparing prostatectomies a year.

Mr Laniado grew up in North London and is married with two children. He enjoys windsurfing in Poole, tennis, running and walking his labradors in Windsor Great Park amongst other locations.

Vascular Surgery

Professor Mark Whiteley is becoming known as the "Celebrity Veins Doctor" following his highly public treatment of Virgin DJ and Celebrity Chris Evans in November 2019. Using his pioneering techniques for varicose veins and thread veins, Mark has treated many celebrities over the last 20 years. Those who have gone public include Kate Lawler, Ian Hyland, and Eve Cameron. Mark has been featured in Tatler as "Best for veins" for the last 11 years.

Professor Mark Whiteley is a Consultant Venous Surgeon at The Whiteley Clinic and a visiting Professor at The University of Surrey. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome and he was the first surgeon to perform endovenous (keyhole) surgery for varicose veins in the UK.

Professor Whiteley opened The Whiteley Clinic in 2003, which is now a network known as The Whiteley Clinic. He has a research and education unit there and his team has won national and international prizes for their advances in venous surgery for leg and pelvic veins. They have also published over 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Professor Whiteley has been named as the recommended vein surgeon by Tatler for over 11 years. In 2001, he and Judy Holdstock invented the TRLOP technique used for closing incompetent perforating veins. He has also written a book - "Understanding Venous Reflux: The Cause of Varicose Veins and Venous Leg Ulcers" and had edited a book with Emma Dabbs "Advances in Phlebology and Venous Surgery Volume 1".

In February 2019 he performed the first microwave treatment of varicose veins in the UK.

In May 2019 he performed the first Echotherapy (Sonovein using HIFU - High Intensity focused ultrasound) treatment of varicose veins in the UK.

Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments

Echotherapy or SONOVEIN (HIFU - High Intensity focused ultrasound) for varicose veins

  • In May 2019, Mark was the first doctor in the UK - and the second doctor in the world - to perform Sonovein treatment for varicose veins.
  • Sonovein uses HIFU - High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound - to ablate varicose veins. Unlike any other method of ablating varicose veins, this is totally non-invasive. The treatment happens by beaming Ultrasound across the skin and concentrating the power on the target vein (see: https://thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk/sonovein-hifu-high-intensity-focused-ultrasound/)

ENDOVENOUS MICROWAVE Varicose veins ablation (emwa)

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) - Walk in Walk out local anaesthetic only

  • Radial laser for larger veins
  • Jacket fibre laser for smaller veins
  • All treatments based on The Whiteley Protocol - a research-based protocol to optimise treatments

Endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) - WALK IN WALK OUT LOCAL ANAESTHETIC ONLY

  • RFiTT - using the Whiteley Protocol proven technique to assure closure
  • VenClose

VenAseal glue "Superglue" for varicose veins -

  • Non-thermal and so reduces the need for local anaesthetic injections.

Clarivein (MOCA)

  • Mechanochemical ablation (MOCA) called "Clarivein" uses a rotating wire and sclerotherapy to close varicose veins without needing many local anaesthetic injections.

Foam Sclerotherapy

  • Made using the published "Whiteley-Patel" technique and CO2:O2 (not air) to keep as safe as possible.

TRLOP - Transluminal Occlusion of Perforator veins

  • Invented by Mark Whiteley and Judy Holdstock in 2001, the TRLOP technique is used to close incompetent perforating veins. Failure to treat these veins has been shown to be one of the commonest reasons that varicose veins come back again after treatment.

Phlebectomy of forehead and facial veins

  • Removal of large veins from the forehead and from around the eyes under local anaesthetic with virtually no scars.

Coil embolisation of pelvic veins

  • At the Whiteley Clinics we have specialist radiologists that work with us who perform coils embolisation of pelvic veins in patients with pelvic varicose veins or pelvic congestion syndrome.

Microsclerotherapy

  • For leg spider veins (Telangectasia).
