“I have had problems with my teeth and dentistry for many years. When I was 11yrs old I was playing tennis and my doubles partner hit me in the face with his racket which smashed my front tooth. My dentist at the time removed the nerve, filled it and placed a cap on what remained. This triggered a sequence of dental issues. Standard fillings made me very ill and I’d spend weeks in bed with constant infections leading to continuous antibiotics. I knew this was abnormal and although the many dentists I saw over the years were also confused I was given no answers. In June 2017 I needed another filling. Although I was desperate to avoid more dentistry I had no choice. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. A couple of days after the filling, every joint in my body started to crack and I developed such severe back pain that it forced me to close by business and I was unable to move from bed for several months. I was extremely worried. I have 2 young daughters and was now entirely reliant on my wife to look after us all. I didn’t think things could get any worse until one day I lost the sight in my left eye, developed a tingling sensation in the left of my head and started having what can only be described as panic attacks. This really concerned me - I am a confident character running a successful business and was a top athlete but my life was crumbling. I met with numerous medical professionals from rheumatologists, neurologists, maxillofacial specialists, pain clinics etc but their tests showed nothing was wrong. None of the medications helped and arguably made things worse. I didn’t know who I was, I was broken, lost and couldn’t fulfil my role as a father. Days of internet research finally lead me to David Harvie-Austin. There was overwhelming evidence online about how mercury in metal fillings can negatively affect the body in many ways and David is the Chairman of the British Society for Mercury Free Dentistry. I called David in desperation and he asked me to complete a questionnaire about my health issues. By now I could tick nearly all of the ailments listed that could be associated with mercury toxicity. Having met so many professionals who hadn’t been able to help I was a little sceptical but he was clearly well informed, caring and considerate and understanding of my issues (many others were dismissive which was frustrating). David looked inside my mouth and took the relevant X Rays and pictures before laying out a plan. As you can imagine I was nervous about more dentistry being clear in my mind of the link to my debilitating health issues but was left with few options and now confident in his knowledge and ability. I went ahead with David’s plan. He suggested I have all 5 of the metal fillings removed / replaced over a few appointments. He took a reading of how much mercury was being released by each filling and determined extremely high levels. He took every precaution to ensure none of the toxic vapour would be ingested when the fillings were drilled which involves special equipment that’s different to standard dental tools designed to take out large pieces of metal filling vastly reducing the amount of toxic vapour released. He placed charcoal tablets under my tongue to neutralise and excess mercury vapour also. Despite having teeth extracted and extensive work done I went home to recover and given my previous reaction I feared the worst but to my surprise, for the first time I didn’t develop an infection, had no need for antibiotics and my mouth recovered far more swiftly than ever before. I’ve since seen David 5 times over the last 18 months and I’m now mercury free. Although it’s been slow going my health has improved a great deal and a quality of life for me and my family has started to return. I consider David to be the most professional, knowledgeable and genuine dentists I’ve ever met and now consider him not just the best dentist but also a friend who has been instrumental in giving me my life back. I can not recommend him highly enough whether for standard dentistry or for those experiencing unexplained health issues where the medical world is left baffled. “
