I think the Whittington is a very good hospital which has risen magnificently to the challenges of the last 15 months or so. I have experienced many departments of the hospital over the past 50 years - haematology, urology, audiology, ENT, fractures, gastroenterology, and have had a number of procedures and operations as an in and out patient. The nursing and medical staff have always been terrific - and some departments, notably haematology, have been outstanding in their customer focus. If the hospital had a weak point it is in some of its central administrative and IT systems - information not passed on, poor join-up between departments, inconsistency in the way customers are treated. Two quick examples. First, I have been seen several times in the men’s surgery ward by a doctor who prescribes a change in medicine or treatment but because no nurse is in attendance in the doctor’s round it has taken between 8-10 hours before that information is written up by the doctor and registered on the system at the nurse station. If the doctor had a simple handheld device he or she could register that info immediately on the round. Second, if there are delays in haematology out-patients, those waiting are always kept in the picture and reassured. In other departments I have experienced out patient waiting time of sometimes 1-3 hours, without any explanation or information, leading to unnecessary anxiety particularly amongst the elderly that they have been missed or forgotten. Small and consistent improvements - uniform across departments and drawing on good practice from the best - would be a simple and cost-free way of ensuring a good customer experience across the board. Overall, however, the Whittington rises to the challenge of being a brimming full hospital with great professionalism and cheerfulness. We are fortunate to have it in our community.

I have spent much time in the Whittington both as in- and out-patient. The staff there are always friendly and helpful and I feel in safe hands.

One problem with Day Treatment is not having enough information before hand, especially for the Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy. It was not made clear that the appointment made was the first of 3 visits. The photocopy was not clear enough for me to read at the time. I read it carefully when at home (needing magnifying glass) The obvious information needed when having the pre-Covid test was that there would be a series of appointments. How could I know that? I since scanned it for my daughter but I needed this information much earlier so that I could plan. I am willing to help with communications having good experience to do that.
