Despite the Covid restrictions, there was plenty of opportunity to speak to someone face to face or via Zoom.

I found the whole experience enlightening and learnt from my stay, nurses were very kind and listened if I had anxiety. The food was good but I kept having to remind them of my intolerances and when they said it was fine for me to have they then rung to say wasn’t even though its on as my allergies on my meal plan and had to have a jacket potato

It took some time to get used to the environment, but I eventually settled in well, made some great friends, and got on okay with the staff. I was gradually able to trust that most staff members were just trying to help, although there were a few incidents which I still believe could’ve been handled more sensitively. Particularly around a month into my stay, I was made to feel like my pace of progress was wrong, and didn’t feel like staff and Dr Murphy believed I was trying my best. I had a difficult night where I was left alone and self harmed despite telling a nurse (Vickie) that I felt unsafe. I’ve also not been very happy with how Mary has handled situations, being unnecessarily strict, saying I’m lying when I’ve raised concerns at the table (there was a bug in my berries), and just generally making me feel like a burden. There was an incident early on where she told me and some other patients to stop talking about LGBTQ+ topics at the table, and told a student nurse that it was inappropriate. I’m afraid I do not believe her claim to have been ‘protecting me’ from the subject matter, as she hadn’t shown any care or even spoken to me at all before this happened. On a lighter note, most of the staff have been lovely, particularly Bill, Angelica, and I managed to turn over a new leaf with Vickie too. They have really listened to me, gone out of their way to show that they care, and handled difficult situations with patience and a gentle voice. Overall my experience here has been positive - I would only hope that future patients continue to feel that care and patience.
