What is a clinical geneticist?
A clinical geneticist provides genetic counselling if an individual or a family member is affected by genetic-based conditions. They can provide genetic testing and risk assessment as well as help a person concerned or at risk of rare disorders to live and reproduce as normally as possible.
When to see a clinical geneticist?
You may wish to see a geneticist to determine if you carry a specific genetic mutation or to determine your risk if a disorder which may be present in a family member such a Huntington’s disease. You may have been found to have a genetic condition such as Haemochromatosis or multiple colon polyps for which you wish to know if you carry a gene mutation and the chance of passing it to children.
