Mr Marc Laniado specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate cancer and urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate (BPH). His aim is to return men to normal life quickly with the least side effects. Being a consultant since 2002 in the full-time direct clinical care of patients, without other distractions, he has great experience and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and urinary symptoms due to the prostate (BPH).

Marc Laniado offers an individualised approach, tailoring the tests or treatments to the specific values of the man he sees.

For men at risk of prostate cancer, he offers advanced tests:

  • SelectMDx urine test for prostate cancer
  • multiparametric MRI

  • MRI-targeted transperineal prostate biopsies under local (PrecisionPoint) or general anaesthesia

For men, who need therapy for prostate cancer, Marc Laniado offers:

  • Prolaris:  a special way of analysing prostate biopsies to help avoid active treatment more safely
  • Focal therapy with HIFU when appropriate, as it preserves bladder control and erections.
  • Retzius-sparing prostatectomy; a special version of the robotic prostatectomy technique for the early recovery of bladder control and erections. To make as sure as possible cancer has been removed, the prostate is analysed in real-time, which is called NeuroSAFE, so that more tissue can be removed if necessary. To make the recovery more comfortable,  urine is drained though a suprapubic tube rather catheter in the penis. Marc Laniado does more than 100 cases a year.

To help men have fewer side effects from radiotherapy, He does SpaceOAR insertions under local anaesthetic.

For men with urinary symptoms due to BPH, Marc Laniado advises men on lifestyle changes and medications. Where these are unsuccessful, he performs day-case procedures that alleviate urinary symptoms without affecting ejaculation (UroLift, Rezum). Some men have unsuitable prostates and need a HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) and Aquablation, which can also preserve erections and ejaculation.  These are performed as day-case sometimes or overnight stay).

Marc Laniado trained in open prostatectomy started laparoscopic prostatectomies in 2006 and moved onto robotic prostatectomies in 2008/9. He switched from the anterior approach for robotic prostatectomy to the Retzius-sparing technique at the end of 2016. He does this for all patients, as it gives the quickest recovery of bladder control, especially when combined with full functional urethral length preservation, which is a surgical technique to preserve the sphincter (valve) muscle. Marc does nerve-sparing whenever possible and checks the surgical margins intraoperatively with frozen section to ensure the surgical margins are negative. This allows more nerve-sparing to be performed, and so more erections to be preserved. Marc does about 100 cases a year.

Marc Laniado is the chairman of the prostate cancer multidisciplinary team at the HCA Wellington Hospital and prostate cancer lead at Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health). He trains other surgeons in the robotic prostatectomy. He has driven the development of multiparametric MRI and MRI-targeted fusion biopsies of the prostate to diagnose men accurately. He started MRI-targeted biopsies in 2012 and does over two hundred MRI-targeted fusion biopsies a year. He introduced Retzius sparing prostatectomy at the end of 2016 as his preserved surgical technique (100 cases a year). He is the primary investigator at Wexham Park for several prostate cancer clinical trials.

By continually increasing his knowledge and awareness of developments in surgical treatments for urological conditions, he brings his expertise and experience to the patient by introducing them into his regular practice, ensuring that patients receive the very best care.

After having graduated from Guy's and St Thomas' medical school, Mr Laniado studied on urological training schemes in London and spent a period at the Cleveland Clinic. He has since gained further recognition and awarded further qualifications and an award from The British Urological Foundation Fellowship, Gilbert Bursary and other awards.
