Dr Naqvi studied medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Medical School (now part of King’s College London). During this time, she also obtained a first class honours bachelor’s degree, then completed her MBBS degree in 1995 and was awarded honours in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Dr Naqvi trained in adult cardiology, then completed general paediatric training in London and Birmingham. Her training covered general paediatrics, neonatology, paediatric oncology, and paediatric intensive care. She has a master’s from the Institute of Child Health in London. In 2000, she completed her paediatric cardiology training at Guy’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr Naqvi has been working as a consultant at Royal Brompton Hospital since 2011. During her career, she has won a number of national prizes, including the British Congenital Cardiac Association prize for research and a Royal Society of Medicine prize for paediatrics.

Dr Naqvi won Aisan Woman of the Year in 2019.

Dr Beverly Tsai-Goodman studied medicine at the University of Southampton. In 2004 she was awarded a doctorate from the University of Bristol where she trained in paediatric cardiology and practised as a consultant until 2016. Additionally, from 2004 to 2014, Dr Tsai-Goodman was the leading cardiologist for the Barth Syndrome Specialist Services in Bristol.

Dr Julene Carvalho is a consultant fetal cardiologist and is head of the Royal Brompton Centre for Fetal Cardiology, where she treats both private and NHS patients.

She graduated with honours in Brazil, and completed her initial training in cardiology in São Paulo.

Following that, she came to London where she completed her training in paediatric cardiology and obtained her PhD.

She subsequently specialised in imaging the fetal heart throughout pregnancy (fetal cardiology) and since 1999, her work has been focused on this area.

Clinical expertise

Dr Julene Carvalho has extensive experience in imaging the fetal heart and counselling families ‘at risk of’ or ‘affected with’ fetal congenital heart disease (CHD).

She pioneered the use of transabdominal fetal echocardiography in the first trimester of pregnancy and is known for her expertise in early scans.

Alongside obstetricians and obstetric ultrasonographers, she works to improve recognition of congenital heart disease before birth, get better results and improve diagnosis.
