Dr Nikhil Thapar is a Consultant in Paediatrician Gastroenterology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Academic Lead for Gastroenterology at UCL Institute for Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He qualified from Southampton University, trained in paediatrics in the Wessex region and undertook a subspecialist training in Paediatric Gastroenterology in London. In 2004 Dr Thapar obtained his PhD studying neurogastroenterology and gut motility disorders and the therapeutic potential of stem cells in these pathologies. He was awarded a Clinician Scientist post at the UCL Institute of Child Health and subsequently a Senior Lectureship. He took up a consultant position in 2006. 

Dt Thapar sees patients with all general paediatric conditions and is particularly interested in neurogastroenterology, gut motility disorders and conditions that overlap with gut motility including allergy, metabolic and connective tissue disorders. He runs a specialist clinical service for children with congenital and acquired gut motility disorders, which includes state-of-the-art diagnostics, in-patient and out-patient facilities.

Dr Thapar is actively involved in clinical research and has co-authored numerous publications in the field of paediatric gastroenterology. He also chairs the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) Gut Motility Disorders Working Group and sat on the BSPGHAN council as research lead. He is the Paediatric (ESPGHAN) representative on the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) ‘Future Trends Committee’. Dr Thapar is passionate about education as well and is co-executive director of the Academy of Paediatric Gastroenterology.
