Dr Fletcher has over 24 years experience in Dermatology and has worked as a Consultant Dermatologist since 2003.

She has been interested in Dermatology since her medical school days and was awarded the Dermatology prize in her final undergraduate year. Her burgeoning interest was furthered by spending her elective in Australia combining adult and paediatric dermatology in Adelaide along with the Flying Obstetric and Gynaecology service in Queensland.

Prior to starting clinical training posts in Dermatology at the prestigious St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s Hospital and Lewisham Hospital, she undertook clinical research into the features of fungal toenail infections, based at Guy’s Hospital. Dr Fletcher intensified her study in this area during her final year of Dermatology specialist training; by spending a month-long sabbatical with a renowned Dermatologist in Paris.

Dr Fletcher was appointed Consultant Dermatologist at Kingston Hospital in 2003 and was instrumental in setting up the multidisciplinary skin cancer service. Her work within Dermatology was recognised by election to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007. In the same year, her outstanding work was recognised within Kingston Hospital with a Level 2 Clinical Excellence Award.

Dr Fletcher receives excellent feedback; anonymised data collected for revalidation in 2020 showed that 100% of her patients were happy to see her again. Additionally, she receives high-quality feedback from colleagues.

Dr Fletcher retired from the NHS, after 28 years of service, in April 2018.

Dr Fletcher is passionate about providing the best care possible for patients. She gives generous appointment slots and likes to work in partnership with her patients. She has close links with her Plastic Surgeon colleagues.

She is supported by an excellent Practice Manager, Dodo Cassidy, who is always ready to take phone or email enquiries, within office hours.

Dr Fletcher lives in Kingston and values the opportunity to look after the dermatological needs of her local community. When not working she enjoys landscape and nature photography and spending time with her family.

Dr Fletcher is registered with all the major Insurance Companies. She holds BUPA Premier Consultant status, she is an AXA PPP Fee Approved Specialist and a Vitality Core Consultant.

What is Mole Removal?

Moles (also known as melanocytic naevi) are brown or black growths on the skin made up of cells called melanocytes and can appear anywhere on the skin. Moles can raise or change colour as the years pass, and hairs may develop. Moles also respond to hormonal changes, for example, they can get slightly darker in pregnant women, increase in number in teenagers, or slowly disappear in the elderly. Common types of moles include junctional melanocytic naevi (brown, round and flat), dermal melanocytic naevi (raised, pale and hairy) and compound melanocytic naevi (raised above the skin, light brown and hairy). Uncommon types include halo naevi (surrounded by white ring) and blue naevi (dark blue moles). Most people want to remove the moles due to concerns about the possibility of skin cancer, or due to cosmetic reasons. It should be noted that most moles are completely harmless.

How is a Mole Removal performed?

Mole removal can be with or without stitches. Moles that are dark and flat may need to be removed with stitches. The surgeon first sterilizes and numbs that area, then cut the mole using a scalpel. Stitches will then be put inside the wound or on the skin surface, depending on the depth of the mole. For removal without stitches, the surgeon shaves the mole carefully so that it is either levelled or slightly below the skin. After that, an electrical tool is used to burn the area (cauterize) to stop any bleeding. The process is complete after covering of the wound with a sterile dressing.

How to prepare for a Mole Removal?

Scarring is a common issue after a mole removal so if you are thinking of removing a mole for cosmetic reasons, discuss with your surgeon to understand the location and size of the scar before making a decision.

What happens after a Mole Removal?

After the procedure, your doctor will prescribe you antibiotic ointment and give you a bandage on the wound. In fairly simple cases, follow-ups are not required. However, if you spot anything unusual, you should contact your doctor immediately and seek medical help.

For mole removal with stitches, follow-up depends on the type of future used. Sutures on the face are normally removed within four to seven days while stitches elsewhere may be removed after one to two weeks.

You should also be careful not to get the area dirty as it can promote infection. Mole removal can also be followed with slight discomfort which will be relieved by pain killers.
