What is a Gastric Bypass?

Gastric bypass if a form of weight loss surgery used to treat people who are dangerously obese. It involves re-routing your digestive system past most of your stomach so that you digest less food and you feel full having eaten less food. Weight loss occurs very rapidly following surgery, however, a lifelong plan including a carefully controlled diet and regular exercise is needed to avoid putting weight back on and long-term complications.

How is a Gastric Bypass performed?

There are two stages to this procedure. The first makes your stomach smaller by dividing it into a small upper section and large lower section using staples. This means you will feel full quicker and therefore eat less food.
The second step is the bypass. A part of your small intestine (jejunum) is connected to the small hole in the upper section of your stomach. The food will now travel from the small upper section to your small intestine making your body absorb fewer calories. The procedure can be carried out either by keyhole surgery or open surgery.

How to prepare for a Gastric Bypass?

Before the procedure a physical examination, blood tests, nutritional counselling and ultrasounds of your gall bladder will be carried out to ensure you’re in good health for the procedure. You should stop smoking several weeks before the surgery and should not start after the procedure as it slows recovery and increases the risk of complications. You should also tell the doctor if you are on any medication as it could affect the surgery. On the day of the procedure, you should have been advised as to when you should stop eating or drinking.

What happens after a Gastric Bypass?

Most people stay in surgery 1- 4 days after the surgery to check everything went well. You might not be able to eat up to three days after the procedure, and can go home once you can eat liquids or purified food and not vomit, move without much pain and do not need IV pain relief.
You may find other medical condition such as asthma, type two diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol can improve following weight loss.
