Jayesh is a London based Podiatrist with many years of experience, working in the field of podiatry, biomechanics and gait analysis for over 15 years. He trained and first practised at University College London and The London Foot Hospital. Working at this prestigious centre of excellence provided Jayesh with invaluable exposure to complex sports and other musculoskeletal cases. After this he went on to pursue further training in the complex area of lower limb biomechanics, involving in-depth analysis of posture, walking, and running styles and relating the findings to how the joints and muscles function.

Having developed unique assessment methods Jayesh embarked on a new venture and set up FOOTSCOPE, of which he is the director and lead clinician, a company specialising in the assessment of lower limb biomechanics. The company now operates two fully equipped gait analysis labs, the second of which is on-site here at the Bowskill Clinic. In addition, Jayesh is involved with undergraduate teaching at the Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, University of East London.

His clients are of varying ages and and have a range activity backgrounds. Children suffering from conditions related to skeletal development, those partaking in amateur or professional sports, to people who have symptoms related to their everyday activities. Complaints can range from foot and ankle pain to issues higher up the body or kinetic chain.

Although Jayesh’s expertise is complex foot mechanics, he can also use the advanced analysis tools to equate what is happening at the foot level to the rest of the body. Together with his colleagues at the Bowskill Clinic he has established an impressive multi-disciplinary approach to musculoskeletal complications. He finds that simply taking a quick video of someone on a treadmill or a screen shot of a client on pressure sensors does not lead to a meaningful diagnosis. Therefore, Jayesh uses his experience and expert knowledge to interpret what these results mean, allowing him to identify the primary cause of the symptoms and write a tailored and comprehensive report for each individual client, which ensures his approach remains patient centred.

The FOOTSCOPE gait and motion capture lab is on-site at The Bowskill Clinic. In addition to the high speed video and pressure analysis systems, Jayesh now has the most advanced 3D movement analysis equipment. Utilising an array of optical cameras he can objectively measure joint movement and interaction in a way that no other system can. It is considered the gold standard when analysing movement in all dimensions.

When indicated he will prescribe bespoke and functional orthotics/insoles. Normal insoles tend to simply cushion a foot and apply some bulk in the arch area. However the data gathered from a client’s analysis will provide Jayesh with the information to prescribe a customised device to modify and improve foot function. This allows the muscles and joints to operate in a more desirable and natural manner, rather than forcing the foot to become almost dormant and reliant on the device. This in turn leads to a more comfortable return to activities.

We are the original London Foot Clinic established in 1989. We provide comprehensive care with the full scope of podiatric services. However, our speciality is podiatric surgery and
biomechanical management of functional orthopaedic disorders.

Our practice philosophy centres around providing the most up to date and highest quality of treatment. Our approach, however, is to emphasise conservative care whenever possible. In
prescribing treatment, we make every effort to offer the patient alternatives and necessary information so that a properly informed choice of treatment can be mutually agreed upon.

What is a Gait Analysis?

Gait analysis is a procedure used to assess and treat individuals with conditions affecting their ability to walk or run. It is most commonly used in sports biomechanics to help athletes run efficiently and identify problems in gait that could lead to injury.

How is a Gait Analysis performed?

This procedure will usually take place in a laboratory. You will have several markers placed over your body, which will be read by several cameras around the room. You will then be asked to walk or run and the computer reads and calculates the trajectory of each marker. The computer can then calculate a detailed analysis of movement for each joint. There may also be force plates in the laboratory to calculate the pressure for going through each joint when you walk or run. You may be also asked to wear EMG (electromyography) markers to calculate muscle activation when you walk or run.

How to prepare for a Gait Analysis?

There is not much to be done to prepare for the procedure. It is important to wear the correct footwear and clothes for walking or running in. You may also be asked for some areas of the skin to be shaved for some of the EMG markers. This is important as body hair can sometimes create abnormalities in electrical activity.

What happens after a Gait Analysis?

After the procedure a healthcare professional can analyse the gait and look for any abnormalities. If any abnormalities are found you may be referred to a physiotherapist or an orthopaedic surgeon for treatment.
