What is the safest way to remove ear wax?

Ear wax, or cerumen is a natural cleaning agent that helps the ears from getting infected. It works by collecting dirt, bacteria, and other debris. Usually, the ear wax comes out naturally through chewing motions or jaw movements. However, wax can sometimes build up and affect your hearing. This is more likely to happen if you have a smaller ear canal, or it has a sharper curve to it, making it difficult for the wax to work its way out.

The safest way to remove ear wax is to visit your doctor as they will have special instruments to flush out the wax out of your ears. These include a cerumen spoon, forceps, and suction device to clear the blockage.

What is microsuction ear wax removal?

Microsuction ear wax removal is a simple procedure where your doctor or audiologist uses a small suction device to remove the wax out of your ears. During treatment the doctor uses a binocular microscope to have a clear view of the ear canal so that they can make sure that all of the wax is removed.

One of the advantages of microsuction ear wax removal is that it is pain free and more comfortable for the patient. Ear syringing (irrigation) can cause patients some discomfort and  there is a slight risk that it can cause damage to the lining of the ear canal. In addition, you don’t need to do any preparation beforehand with microsuction, unlike syringing where you need to take ear drops for at least a week to soften the wax so that it can be removed. Microsuction ear wax removal also allows the doctor to thoroughly examine the ear for infections or perforations using the binocular microscope.

Can you get same day ear wax removal?

It is possible to have same day ear wax removal through microsuction as no preparation is required. Ear wax can easily be removed through microsuction and the doctor always has a clear view of the ear canal at all times through the binocular microscope. This allows the procedure to be done efficiently.

How to prepare for an ear wax removal procedure?

Unless you’re having microsuction procedure for removing wax, you need to prepare by putting drops into your ears to soften the wax for syringing. To prepare for the ear wax removal procedure, use oil to soften the wax twice a day for one week. Products such as cooking oil, mineral oil, and olive oil are all effective in softening wax. Tilt your head to the side and using a pipette (dropper), add 3 to 4 drops into the blocked ear. Get a friend to help you if you need to. Keep your head to the side for 5 minutes ideally on a flat surface like a table to allow the oil to enter the ear canal. Repeat the process for the other if you’re having both ears syringed. Some people find it easier to carry out this process once in the morning and once at night before they go to sleep. After 5 to 7 days, the wax should be softened enough to be easily removed with a syringe. Depending on how much wax is blocking the ear, your doctor may need to syringe you again, but they will advise you of this.
