Roberto Casula is Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College NHS Trust in London. He was appointed at Imperial in 2001.

He is one of the most experienced cardiac surgeons in the UK in both traditional and key-hole heart procedures; he performed the first successful robotic and minimal access heart operations in the UK in 2003. He has been offering his patients all available minimal access heart operations including coronary revascularisation, mitral, tricuspid valve repair and replacements, minimal access aortic valve replacements and minimal access surgical or hybrid atrial fibrillation ablation.

Roberto graduated at Padova University Medical School in Italy in 1989, and then trained in the UK in Cardiac, Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Organs Transplantation. He is registered with the GMC (no.: 4003801) and a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. His excellent cardiac surgical results over 20 years activity have been regularly published by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery and are available in the public domain.

Over the last two decades, Mr Casula has been honoured to be invited as a visiting surgeon and has personally performed traditional, minimal access and robotic cardiac operations in other European countries and prestigious Heart Centres including Milan, Bologna, Bari, Florence, Pisa, Udine, Athens, the Middle East and the West Indies.

Since his first consultant appointment in 1998, Dr Casula has carried out over five thousand traditional major cardiac operations and performed the entire spectrum of cardiac surgical procedures including reoperations, complex isolated or multiple valves combined procedures, coronary revascularisation and atrial fibrillation surgery.

His academic interests have mainly focused on new surgical technology and surgical innovation, robotics and frailty assessment in the elderly and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and a 550 pages textbook and atlas in Minimal Invasive Thoracic and Cardiac and Surgery.

Mr Casula is one of few experienced heart surgeons in the UK with a large and established experience in both minimal access and traditional heart operations and each patient is assessed according to his/her clinical needs and suitability for either type of surgical approach.

Dr Brennan's main areas of expertise are cancer, cardiac and endocrine genetics.

His interest in genetics started as a medical student in the 1980s when the medical speciality of clinical genetics was in its infancy. After a research degree studying genes in the developing heart, he completed his medical training and undertook postgraduate training in adult medicine and paediatrics before specialist training in Clinical Genetics.

Dr Brennan was appointed as an NHS Consultant in Clinical Genetics in 2002 with the Northern Genetics Service based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After opening a new satellite clinical genetics department in Middlesbrough, he was appointed to the role of Clinical Director of the Northern Genetics Service in 2008, managing a clinical and laboratory team providing genetics diagnostics for the population of North East England and North Cumbria.

Dr Brennan has been Clinical Lead for Cardiac and Endocrine Genetics for the Northern Genetics Service since 2003; he was Clinical Lead for Cancer Genetics 2002 to 2020. 

A particular interest is the use of new technology and novel clinical pathways to improve diagnosis and management for people living with rare inherited disease. Between 2014 and 2018 he was Clinical Programme Director for the North East & North Cumbria NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, overseeing the introduction of whole genome sequencing into routine care as part of the 100,000 Genomes Project. He is engaged in a number of collaborative research projects, all of which are focused on improving diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Brennan is a keen and popular teacher and lectures to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate audiences in the UK and overseas. He teaches genetics for a week each year at Newcastle University's Medical School in Malaysia.

Dr Anand Saggar is a Senior Consultant in Clinical Genetics at St Georges University Hospital NHS Trust. He trained at St Bartholomew's Medical School, University of London, where he qualified in 1982. Dr Saggar began his career at St Bartholomew's Hospital from where he went on to work in several London Teaching Hospitals and also the Karolinska Nobel institute in Sweden. He has a extensive record of experience in genetics, respiratory medicine, diabetes/endocrinology, cardiology, intensive care, nephrology (kidney disorders) and neurology. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

He led the multidisciplinary team at St George's for three years, providing services for a population of 2.7 million people in the South West Thames Region. His specific interests include; inherited kidney diseases, paediatric dysmorphology, adult onset genetic conditions, polycystic kidney disease, Marfan and related aortopathy syndomes, hypertension, tuberous sclerosis and family cancer histories.

In addition to this Dr Saggar has published over 40 papers and still continues to publish actively while maintaining his clinical practice. He is also a founder, director and medical adviser to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity (UK) and Ex-President of the Medical Genetics section at the Royal Society of Medicine. Previous to this he was Secretary of the Clinical Genetics Society, which is the UK professional society for Clinical Geneticists. He is also Chairman of Arts St Georges based at that hospital.

When to see a Clinical Geneticist?

You may wish to see a Geneticist to determine if you carry a specific genetic mutation or to determine your risk if a disorder which may be present in a family member such a Huntington’s disease. You may have been found to have a genetic condition such as Haemochromatosis or multiple colon polyps for which you wish to know if you carry a gene mutation and the chance of passing it to children.
