Professor Thomas Bourne is a world-renowned authority on the use of ultrasound in gynaecology and the management of early pregnancy complications. He is adjunct professor in the Department of Surgery & Cancer, within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. Until September 2008, he was consultant gynaecologist at St George’s Hospital, in South London, and reader in acute gynaecology and gynaecological ultrasound at St George’s University of London.
His medical career extends far beyond the theatre rooms and clinics. His extensive knowledge and research has resulted in his editing of six books, publishing over 300 papers in international journals and furthermore seen him invited to speak and chair at numerous international meetings on subjects relating to the use of ultrasound and diagnostics in gynaecology.
Professor Bourne is also on the scientific committee and the board of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and is a medical advisor and trustee of the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. He was a board member of the Association of Early Pregnancy Units up to 2011. Added to this, he is a member of the Medical Research Council panel of experts.
His appetite for pushing the boundaries of his field seemingly knows no bounds and to this extent, his current research interests relate to miscarriage, the management and psychology of early pregnancy complications, early pregnancy embryonic growth, caesarean section scars, the diagnosis of ovarian cancer and the characterization of ovarian pathology. He also has a keen interest in medical regulation and works with the BMA doctors for doctors service on the IMPACT study. It is therefore no surprise that he has ongoing collaborations with staff at key universities around the world including Leuven, Harvard, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Sydney.
In his personal life, Professor Bourne enjoys spending time with his family, attending the theatre and cinema, sailing, cycling and swimming, and is an avid fan of both cricket and rugby. To let off some steam, every now and again you may catch him banging away on a drum kit!
Professor Bourne is now a part of Nuada Gynaecology, a medical group that is co-founded, co-run and co-owned by their clinicians. Because the consultants and healthcare professionals who work for Nuada are all shareholders, they are highly motivated to put patients first in everything that they do.
