He specialises in complex and complicated audiological (hearing & balance) conditions affecting children. As a specialist paediatric trained person, he has a holistic approach and sees beyond the hearing or balance problem.

Dr Hendricks qualified from the Hannover Medical School in 1991, before undertaking specialist training in various paediatric units in Germany, Austria, USA and Canada. He was recognised as a European Specialist for Paediatrics in 1998. Following this, he worked with colleagues in Qatar establishing a paediatric specialist polyclinic, before moving to the UK and working as a paediatrician in Hertfordshire.

Marina is an experienced qualified Audiologist. She graduated with a Masters in Healthcare Science (Audiology) from the University of Southampton and commenced her career primarily in the NHS. Her first job was in West London where she saw mainly adult patients. From here Marina moved on to the challenging but highly rewarding job of a Paediatric Audiologist in East London.

She specialises in audiology assessments, hearing aid fittings, paediatric hearing assessments (mainly those aged 2.5 to 19 years old), play audiometry, assisting on visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA), hearing loss management, otitis media with effusion management and hearing aid repairs. Marina is experienced within her role and believes her work in NHS placements has enabled her to master the core audiological competencies.

The good things she does for her patients include building rapport, involving them in their own care and improving their quality of life. As well as her clinical work Marina has a research interest in hearing aid digital signal processing – particularly noise reduction and speech enhancement.

What is an Audiologist?

An audiologist is a specialist that can diagnose and treat problems associated with hearing and balance. They are capable of carrying out various investigations of hearing and balance to determine the problem causing the deficit. They can provide treatments or can refer you to an ENT surgeon or other specialist for appropriate interventions. They can also provide chronic management and rehabilitation for conditions as tinnitus and vestibular problems and can monitor and manage interventions such as cochlear implants and hearing aids.

When to see an Audiologist?

You may want to see an audiologist when you have noticed an abnormal change in your hearing or balance. You may be referred from your primary care provider to determine the cause of your problem and for appropriate management if the problem does not settle with simple acute management (e.g. for a minor infection). Some audiologists can also provide additional services which you may find useful such as counselling and sign language if necessary.
