What is a psychologist?

A psychologist examines normal and abnormal mental states, looking into perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and social behaviours and exploring how individuals relate to each other and to their environments. As the study of the mind psychology doesn’t always involve therapy. The profession includes a very wide range of specialties, and the term ‘psychologist’ applies to varied roles.

Some psychologists use their knowledge of the mind to solve real-world problems like mental illness. Others operate as social scientists who carry out psychological research and teach at universities. A Research Psychologists does experiments and conducts studies with humans or animals.  A Mental Health Psychologist works with those who are suffering from mental disorders or psychological distress, for example specialist school psychologists. It’s most likely you, as a patient, will see a mental health psychologist.

When to see a psychologist?

Life is all about challenges. But some challenges are easier to deal with than others. If you’re finding it impossible to move on from a loss, for example, if someone you love has died, a psychologist can help ease your pain, help you find your own way through it and emerge stronger.

What conditions does a psychologist treat?

A psychologist treats people with a broad range of issues, including:

  • Serious stress and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Family problems
  • Relationship issues
  • Unhealthy habits
  • Addictions
  • Mental disorders

They can also help enhance your life, for example helping you achieve better mental clarity or improving your physical or mental performance.

What subspecialties are included under psychology?

There’s a long list of subspecialties around psychology, covering child psychology and clinical psychology, cognitive and perceptual, counselling, and developmental psychology. There’s educational psychology, engineering psychology, and separate disciplines for forensic, geriatric, industrial, organisational, school, social, personality, and sports psychology.  Last but not least there’s neuropsychology, studying the relationships between the brain and our behaviour.
