What is Podiatry?

Podiatric surgery is the surgical treatment of the foot and any associated structures, and operations are carried out by a podiatric surgeon. While plenty of foot problems can be fixed with non-surgical treatments, some are best treated by podiatric surgery, especially persistently painful conditions or deformities.

Feet can develop many painful disorders. Mild symptoms can usually be dealt with using non-operative techniques like shoe insoles, modified footwear and injections. If your symptoms persist and start to restrict your daily life, you may need surgery to provide relief and even prevent deformity.

What procedures can you find at a Podiatry clinic?

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Full reconstructive surgery
  • Tailor-made insole, padding and arch supports
  • Biomechanics assessment and management
  • Bandages, splints and casts
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation
  • Joint resection and replacement
  • Osteotomy
  • Joint fusion
  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Distraction osteogenesis
  • Tendon transfer

What should you expect at the Podiatry clinic?

At your first consultation, the podiatrist will take a full medical history from you and ask plenty of questions. You can also ask questions of your own and get answers. They’ll carry out basic tests, including looking at the blood flow and feeling in your feet, and observing your normal way of walking. After talking through your concerns they will make a diagnosis and create a tailored treatment plan. If there are any minor foot issues they can often be dealt with there and then.
