What is a Plastic Surgeon?

A plastic surgeon is a surgeon who is qualified to carry out plastic surgery. A cosmetic surgeon is very different. You choose to have cosmetic surgery to improve your appearance, but plastic surgery is necessary for medical reasons, due to illness, accidents, and birth disorders. It is dedicated to reconstruction rather than enhancement.

Reconstructive surgery covers things like craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, and burn treatment. It’s used to repair missing or damaged tissue and skin in order to restore the function so it’s as close as possible to the norm. Cosmetic or aesthetic surgery simply improves the appearance.

When to see a Plastic Surgeon?

Plastic surgery is more than physical, it also has an emotional impact. It helps improve a person’s self-esteem, confidence and overall quality of life. Most people are referred to a plastic surgeons by their GP or a specialist consultant. If a birth defect, injury or illness has left you looking and feeling self-conscious, is affecting your quality of life or preventing you from doing the things you love, you might like to consult a plastic surgeon.

What conditions does a Plastic Surgeon treat?

  • Skin surgery on cancers, scars, burns, and birthmarks
  • Tattoo removal
  • Maxillofacial work on the facial part of the skull
  • Problems like deformed ears, cleft palates, webbed feet and fingers, birthmarks and cleft lips
  • Places that have been damaged by removing cancers
  • Serious and extensive burns
  • Other serious injuries
