What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is tasked with restoring normal function and stability to the joints, bones and muscles using movement, massage and manipulation, sometimes gentle and other times more ‘forceful’, depending on the problems you’re having. The techniques used are designed to cut pain, improve movement, and drive better blood flow, in an effort to positively benefit your nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. The treatment itself is rarely painful but it’s common to feel sore or stiff for a few days after treatment, especially if your condition involves injury or inflammation.

What procedures can you find at an Osteopathic clinic?

  • Massage
  • Stretching the joints
  • Articulation of the joints
  • High-velocity thrusts
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Blood tests
  • Urine tests
  • Biopsies
  • Prescriptions

What should you expect at an Osteopathic clinic?

Your osteopath will listen to you and ask questions about your condition, symptoms, general health, medical history and lifestyle plus any medicines you take, test results and case notes. You will have a thorough examination, which can involve undressing. You may be asked to make a series of easy stretches and moves so the osteopath can study your posture and range of movement.

They will examine your joints, tissues and ligaments with their hands, a process called palpation, checking for signs of a serious underlying condition. They might send you to your GP or to hospital if they find something amiss. At the end of it you’ll be given treatment recommendations and if you need further tests, for example an MRI scan or blood testing, they’ll refer you.
