What is a General Practitioner?

A General Practitioner or GP is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats acute and chronic illnesses, diseases, injuries and conditions. They also provide preventive care and health education to patients. A general practitioner is usually your first stop along the medical journey, the person you see first of all when you notice there’s a problem. Once they have figured out what’s wrong with you, or decided you need a specialist or urgent help, they will either prescribe medication or treatment, or refer you to a specialist.

A great GP will focus on every aspect of your health, combining the physical, psychological and social aspects of good healthcare. General practitioners look after patients in their homes and communities and play an important role in the wide healthcare landscape, which includes promoting, preventing and initiating treatment, and managing chronic illness in the home.

When to see a General Practitioner?

Your GP is usually the first person you go to see with a health issue. They’re trained to recognise a huge range of conditions, illnesses, injuries, and diseases.  Contact your GP for non-emergency and preventative medical care during clinic hours, for anything that can’t be treated with over-the-counter medicines. A good ongoing relationship with one GP, someone who knows and understands you and your medical history, is an effective way to manage your own health.

What conditions does a General Practitioner treat?

Your GP can provide treatment for a very wide collection of conditions. Here are just a few of them. If it isn’t serious enough to warrant a trip to A&E, see your GP.

  • Skin conditions
  • Eye conditions
  • Digestive issues
  • Mental health issues
  • Ear, nose and throat problems
  • Allergies
  • Aches and pains
  • Non-serious injuries like cuts and bruises
  • Sexual healthcare
  • Colds, flu, bronchitis and seasonal infections like Norovirus
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Warts, bites and stings
  • Acne
  • Sprains and strains
  • Constipation
  • Cystitis
  • Dizziness
  • Eating disorders
  • IBS
  • Hay fever
  • Vertigo
  • Vaccinations
  • Practice Nurse services

What subspecialties are included under General Practice?

GPs are free to develop specialisms. Some take a special interest, for example, in adolescent medicine or the treatment of the elderly. GPs sometimes take part in research and development, and are often involved in research networks. A GP can become a police doctor, work in medical journalism, or take a full-time role with a sporting team. But as the name suggests most GPs are genuine general practitioners, experts with a wide base of knowledge covering numerous medical conditions.
