What is General Practice?

A general practitioner, also called a GP or a generalist, is a doctor who does not specialise in any one area of medicine but has a broad-based knowledge of every aspect of it, from the common cold to cancer. A General Practitioner delivers essential everyday healthcare, things like physical examinations and immunisation, as well as diagnosing, assessing and treating many different conditions, diseases, illnesses and injuries.

A GP has a pool of regular, long-term patients and provides ongoing care throughout life. A GP is usually the first stop for anyone who doesn’t feel well but doesn’t merit a visit to A&E. If a patient develops a serious condition, a general practitioner will refer them to a specialist.

What procedures can you find at a General Practice clinic?

  • Diagnosing and treating disease, pain, illness and injuries
  • Giving vaccinations
  • Prescribing medicines and writing prescriptions
  • Providing reassurance and insight into what’s wrong
  • Giving mental health advice
  • Family planning
  • Caring for wounds and injuries
  • Referring people for tests or scans
  • Simple medical procedures like wart and mole removal
  • Services delivered by the clinic nurse, for example cervical cancer testing
  • Post-operative support

What should you expect at the General Practice clinic?

A good GP clinic always has enough staff, with the right skills needed to support every kind of issue. Because your condition is unique you’ll be treated like an individual with consideration, kindness and care. Unlike public healthcare services, which tend to limit the time you spend with a GP, private General Practitioners spend more time listening to you and exploring your problems in detail. If you need treatment your GP will either prescribe medicine, describe what you need to do, or refer you to a specialist.
