Gastroenterology involves the exploration and investigation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of every kind of gastrointestinal issue, every condition affecting the stomach and intestines. It also covers the hepatological system including the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas. Your primary care physician might refer you to a gastroenterologist for routine tests, for example, colonoscopy screening for colorectal cancer.

Most people are referred by their GP. Sometimes test results will be needed before you can make an outpatient appointment, sometimes you might be referred directly for an Endoscopy or Gastroscopy, which is usually an outpatient procedure.
