What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology involves the exploration and investigation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of every kind of gastrointestinal issue, every condition affecting the stomach and intestines. It also covers the hepatological system including the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas. Your primary care physician might refer you to a gastroenterologist for routine tests, for example, colonoscopy screening for colorectal cancer.

As the study of the normal function and diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver, this is a complex field. A gastroenterologist has a deep understanding of every aspect of the normal physiology of the gastrointestinal organs, including the digestion and absorption of food and waste removal. Common conditions like colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis and gastroesophageal reflux – also called heartburn – all fall under gastroenterology.

What procedures can you find at a Gastroenterology clinic?

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Small bowel endoscopy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Intestinal biopsy
  • Liver biopsy
  • Paracentesis
  • Parenteral nutrition lines for intravenous feeding
  • Liver transplant
  • Transplant aftercare
  • Colonoscopy
  • Polypectomy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD)
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • Laser therapy
  • Hydrogen breathe tests
  • Upper GI physiotherapy

What should you expect at a Gastroenterology clinic?

Most people are referred by their GP. Sometimes test results will be needed before you can make an outpatient appointment, sometimes you might be referred directly for an Endoscopy or Gastroscopy, which is usually an outpatient procedure. Your consultant will discuss everything with you at your appointment, put you at ease, and answer all your questions.
