Endocrinology Nutrition

What is Endocrinology?

Endocrinology focuses on the hormones and the glands and tissues that make them. Humans have more than fifty hormones in total, all of which have a significant impact on human health and development. Endocrinology covers the entire endocrine system, its diseases, and the substances that the system secretes. An endocrinologist is a doctor who treats diseases and conditions related to the hormones.

All multi-celled living beings have hormones, including plants. They control a huge collection of essential activities like growth, development, puberty, sugar regulation, appetite and bone growth. And hormone problems contribute to some of the world’s most common and serious diseases, things like diabetes, thyroid conditions, pituitary conditions, neurological problems, obesity, bone problems, cancers and more.

What procedures can you find at an Endocrinology clinic?

  • Urine collection to test hormone levels
  • ACTH stimulatory testing
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • CRH stimulation testing
  • Dexamethasone suppression testing
  • Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Oral glucose tolerance testing
  • Octreoscan imaging
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Radioactive iodine scan (RAI)
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Venous sampling

What should you expect at an Endocrinology clinic?

During your first visit, you’ll be asked questions about your condition. Your endocrinologist will use the answers to help make an accurate diagnosis. They can ask about any medications you take, family history, your own health, your diet, any allergies you have and, of course, your symptoms , including any symptoms that don’t appear to be related. This is because your hormones are complex and can affect multiple areas of the body when things go wrong. The endocrinologist will probably check your heart rate and blood pressure as well as examining your skin, hair, teeth, and mouth. You may need to provide blood and urine samples. Once they’ve made a diagnosis, you will be given a tailored treatment plan.
