About

Dr Nadine de Alwis is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon based in Ballarat and sees patients in both the public and private healthcare sector at Ballarat Health Services, Alfred Health and Sovereign ENT.

Dr de Alwis graduated from the University of Melbourne with both her MBBS and Bachelor of Science degrees in 2006. She completed her early surgical training at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne before moving to Ballarat. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2018. Following this, she was appointed as a Consultant at Cairns Private Hospital where she gained vast experience in general adult and paediatric ENT surgery. In 2019 she began her Neurotology Fellowship at St Vincent's Health Network Sydney and gained specialist expertise in major ear surgery including mastoidectomy, stapedectomy, cochlear implantation, bone conduction implants and acoustic neuroma surgery. She also gained experience in endoscopic ear surgery and the management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Dr de Alwis has special interests in paediatric ENT surgery. Through her experience of having two young children, she understands the stress and concern following tonsillectomies and offers parents the choice of tonsillotomy (near total removal of tonsil) as an alternative. Tonsillotomy using coblation technology has been shown to reduce post tonsillectomy pain, reduce risk of late bleeding and decrease recovery times. Dr de Alwis also has specialist interest in the following:

  • Otosclerosis
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Cholesteatoma surgery
  • Grommet insertion
  • Turbinate surgery
  • Skull base tumours (e.g. vestibular schwannoma and acoustic neuroma)
